I can't remember the name of the store, but when I was in Perth a few years ago I bought a moulded dash mat for the Rangie from one of the Land Rover parts suppliers. They had mats to suit every every model and they were only about $30-$40ea. It was an impulse buy I couldn't go past.

you can order them from auto one, i got mine ages ago and proper land rover discovery floor mates with the logo and everything embroided. Dash mat was 40 bucks if i remember rightly, mine is a 98 model.
On my D1, the dash is in excellent condition and I want keep it that way.
Up here in the tropics the dash can get pretty hot and bugger up in just a couple of years.
So I just folded a towel and placed it across the whole dash, works a treat, good protection, can be washed and doesn't look out of place,
cost me nothing as I pinched it out of the wifes linen press !
In fact most people dont even know its there untill I point it out.
Cant beat the old style do it yourself bush blacksmithing !

I know I probably sound like a goose, but I have a family history of people who try to retain things in 'as new' condition forever and it annoys the heck out of me! Worst example was my grandparents (now long departed) who had a HZ from new with carpet cut to fit over all surfaces and rugs over all the seats... after they died and the car was cleaned up for sale, it still had plastic from the factory on the seats and door linings! It was pristine underneath all that crap... but for nearly twenty years they drove around in a car that they couldn't enjoy the 'accomodations' in for fear of damaging them... guess what - the car made maybe $500 more than a typically used version which was shared between 10+ benefactors. I say use it, enjoy it and if/when it gets damaged, fix it....
I aint mentioned the chest freezer with the cardboard box left surrounding it for 15 years either in the middle of the kitchen! was it going to hold more resale value?
I agree with you about the "Use your stuff" attitude. My Rangie does get used but the dash was so sun damaged it has colapsed and bits fall off now and again it's that brittle. I just got a replacement that looks good as new, (well doesn't have holes and not brittle) guess what it had a dash cover!
No it's not to keep it as new just so that it doesn't fall off in lumps when you touch it.
