House - burglar alarms - diy?

I few years ago i knew a bloke that did alarms on the side. He showed me a catalogue of a place somewhere in sydney that was like an alarm supermarket - or alarm warehouse that sold trade alarm parts,

As my wife and i have just bought a house i was going to get the ole man - landroverterry (sparks) to do the alarm -

does anyone know of a place (other than jaycar) that do alarm bits n pieces to the trade....

    Mick

I don't know of places but my Dad's place has a back to base alarm. I'm pretty sure it was free (inc. install) so long as you signed up to their monitoring plan for a set period. Similar to mobile phones.

It was all plug and play. No sparky required.

A large dog is, I believe, more effective.

Mick, in your profession, you should have access to the data of which is the best deterrent. Some of our neighbiours have been burgled. We have never had a problem

A house nearby has had its alarm system go off on a regular basis for many years - at least the last 14 (since we returned to Australia). We disregard it.

No one disregards our dog - not even our rellies! OK, I'm wrong - the 6 and 7 yo school girls on their way home from school come up to our gate to say G'day to Johnson - but adults stay clear.

The biggest problem is that one can't drop everything and just go away for the weekend. We need to book a kennel (I won't take a dog with me).

a large standard poodle that has a hairy coat which disguises what breed he is is also very effective about size of a german shepherd and prehaps slightly more intelligent.

no one walks past the house let alone come to the front door without Jacque making sure they know he is watching them.

he is a pain in the **** as though he can actually see whats on television so dogs and animals on tv sets him off and he also barracks for the eagles (the ex corrupted him with chips on the lounge to get him to swap from being a pies supporter)

Hi landrovermick, when I use to do security installations, this was the company I dealt with

Micron Alarms, their web site needs a bit of work but if you click around it you should find what you need. See the link bellow.

Good mob and always helpful with info on their products and they are out your way, near Seven Hills.

    Cheers

This is the problem with a dog. When you go away people generally take the dog with them or put them in a kennel. The dog isn't doing much for home protection then.
We have always had German Shephards at my Dad's house since I was a kid. One was a trained guard dog. It seemed like the dumbest dog we ever had to me but friends used to comment on that vicious dog we had if they came over and we weren't home. It even jumped a very high gate we had to stop someone stealing our lawn mower that had been left out. That was impressive.
Problem these days is when my parent's go away so do the dogs. So they got an alarm after they got robbed while they were away.

If you know someone in the electrical trade you can get a kit from the wholesalers, it is packaged as clipsal but is actually a Ness D8. They are around $400 for the kit but you may need extra pir's. I'm installing one at my mums today.

excellent guys, the old man is a sparky, the alarm is for my wife - we have adog, but she wants to alarm herself in when im away for work,

I have been a big one for "get a dog mate and put the alarm box under the eaves, the crooks will move on to the house that doesnt have either" - the advice I have given for years.

But if it makes my wife feel safer when im away im happy to do it. -

as they say happy wife - happy life!
