not sure how heavy duty they are for off road, but might be ok if you are carefull.
Hi to all our Taswegian friends. Just wondering if anyone there knows of a place I can hire a decent off road capable camper trailer. Planning on a trip for 3 weeks next March and this seems like a reasonable option considering the huge rip off to bring one over on the boat (about $300 extra each way).
Really don't understand why its not just the equivalent of say 2 car fares for the car and trailer but there you go![]()
Hope someone can help

I have a number to try, please PM me.
The trailer is in Hobart, and is a designated off roader.

The fare structure does seem to have a few anomolies.
When I went to Tas last month I found that the cost of taking the Defender with the camper on the back was $69 (now $79) even though it was just over 2m wide and about 2.3 high. That was because with the camper on the back, it was a campervan. If I took the camper off the back (making it narrower and lower), it would cost $110 (now $121) because it was no longer a campervan and standard vehicles with bullbars automatically have 1m added to their length. If I took the bullbar off, it would be back to $69.

The bullbar one gripes me, because my bullbar doesn't protrude foward of the bumper at all. I didn't tell them when I took it on the boat last month, and they didn't question me at all. A few people have tried to bring things like old US6 studebakers over to tour the state in, and had ridiculously hight quotes ($1000 each way) because they were classed as commercial vehicles. put a sink, toilet and bed in the back and they could call it a camper and get over cheap!

When I went in Jan 2005 I think it was $55 for a vehicle 5m and under and $95 for over 5m. My Rodeo was about 5.01m with the bull bar. As you say 1m was added to vehicles automatically if they had a bullbar or bike rack (2m for both?). When I rang to book my tickets I told them that even though it had a bullbar it still came in at 5m so why should I pay for 6m? So I only paid for 5m and was told I would have to pay extra at the port when they measured my car if it was over 5m. AFAIK it was never measured.
I was told that trailers cost extra as they were not subsidised and just charged per metre.
If you have no luck finding a rental you might find a member with a camper trailer willing to make some extra cash.

OK all,
Here is a number for Challenge Camper trailer hire in Tassie. They hire on road and offroad camper trailers and they are in Hobart.
Phone john Seabourne on 0409 003 117
Perhaps this should also go into the camper and caravan section?
Thanks,
JC
