There bare 2 factors that have increased the service intervals:
(1) Use of synthetic oils which don't break down (or have the lighter fractions evaporate) like non-synth oils.
(2) Better filters - e.g. diesels like the TD5 with a bypass oil filter keep the oil clean for much longer
When I picked up my Disco the dealer told me it needed to have a full service every 5000km or 6 months whichever was sooner. I'm seeking a second opinon on that!
My 06 D3 TDV6 says service every 12,000 or 6 months or 10,000 in harsh conditions. eg dusty,hot.
Comeing up to 24,000 service in just under 6 months.
