services seem to be getting further and further apart on modern vehicles. Only good I think, although i'm not sure how the oil fares.

I have just purchased a BMW X5 Deisel. The first service is at 25,000k!! And this is a Deisel. Land rover has 20,000k for my TD5 Defender, but I change the oil at 10,000. I know that the fuels are getting cleaner, so this might have something to do with it.

The first service oil change had to do, I believe, with the larger tolerances in manufacturing in the past. A lighter oil was used which allowed the parts to bed in a little and then was changed to a heavier oil. With modern manufacturing tolerances being essentially zero, and with modern oils having better lubricating properties, service intervals can be longer and there is no need for a full "first service."

My Hyundai Getz still had a 1000km "first service" but it was just to tighten up the trim panels No oil was changed.

I had a Vauxhall(Holden) Astra company car a few years back. The servicing interval on that was 20,000 miles (32,000km).

My Disco 3 Service book (late 2005 model) says a service should be done every 12,000 Kms or 6 Months (whichever comes first). So far it's had 3 services and it's only done 30K but it's now 18 month old, so the services have been done on "age" rather than km's.

Just in case anyone else has been mis-informed on D3 servicing by the dealerships... When I bought the car the Salesman told me the servicing was every 24,000 km's with "A" services being optional. The Service Manager told me they were every 10,000kms (well he would wouldn't he ), so I rang Landrover and they confirmed it's every 12,000 and 6 months, otherwise it's possible that elements of the new car warranty could be void due to improper servicing

Interestingly and as someone else has said, the service interval for a Disco 2 is 20,000 Km's so they have got more frequent with the newer model.

The Falcon RTV ute I drive for work had a 'free' 3000k safety service, with no oil changes then at 15000 for the first oil.

It may also be due to the manufacturers competing to keep the total running costs down - this figure takes into account servicing costs and is looked at carefully by fleet buyers. Afterall, any reduction in engine life due to increased oil change intervals wouldnt be apparent for a long time..........

I remember Mitsubishi advising (in small print) that oil changes should still be carried out at 7500km intervals even though the service interval was 15000km.......
