The whole survey may be accurate or a pile of croc. There's no statistical basis for the data (except that 450,000 customers were surveyed) and also the survey is for claims made on the vehicle after the manufacturers warranty has expired. This tends to imply a 4 year or older car as many warranties are 3 years or more now days.

What, nearly every Freelander 1.8 has a head gasket go at 80K or less, with many having a new engine required. Nearly every Freelander prior to 2000 has a centre viscous seize and destroys the transfer gears.

AND AFAIK wait for it , the Kia Carnival V6 is>>> drumroll >>>the Rover V6.

I think this is the perception problem that we Rover people have. We hear of a few problems with Toyotas, and say Oh Toyotas are just as bad as Rovers.
But with Rovers the stats say that at least half of the cars have the problems. AFAIK EVERY 38A had the o rings go in the heater, Etc.
And Rover get away without having a recall and still sell cars!!!
Nevertheless I guess I will keep my old Classic . It needs me.

Looking at the marques near the top - Honda, Mazda, Toyota, Mistubishi, Kia - maybe their owners just have lower standards.

Quite often the reples are made by people on hearsay and inuendo with no real experience of the car. They are not neccesarilly owners of that specific vehicle. I know some of these I have been involved in are loaded surveys. We are happy with our Landies and that is what matters.
Take that tosser on you tube, rubishing the Defender. He has no idea what he is talking about. As far as Defenders go they are one of the most capable standard 4x4s. Comfort has absolutely nothing to do with it and he rates his Sierra better, what a croc. I have driven Sierras and I know what I would rather. As for his claims as to a multiple warn challenge winner at 20. I would like to see him front his real name and credentials. I do not recall such a young multiple winner and in an LS1 Patrol at that. These are the sorts of people that reply to these surveys. If he was an exprienced driver like he says he would not be blaming his so caled mates vehicle. I hope his mates insurance company get a copy of the video.

I may be wrong, but I may not be... The original KIA Carnival used a 2.5 litre V6 which KIA acquired from Mazda and remade it (obviously badly) for their own purposes. Later, when KIA was acquired by Hyundai, the drivetrain is common to all 'bigger' Hyundais...and 'bigger' KIAs.

Having studied statistics for a while at Uni, they can be used to prove (or disprove) anything, just depends on how the survey sample is done and what criteria and correlates are employed.

IE: 100% of Land Rover owners drive a 4WD. Sounds silly? It's wrong, and I'm sure there are statisticians beavering away to disprove, or otherwise, this 'fact'.

IE: 100% of Freelander owners drive a vehicle where the engine will fail.
It's correct. All in the wording and the timing...

Whilst some Land Rovers undoubtedly have design faults, the survey is nothing more than an un-scientific, alarmist piece of rubbish as far as I can see.

The concluding statement about off-road not necessarily meaning reliability is a pointless one, given that some of the marques listed do not make off-roaders!

Another point about extended warranties, is that the customer is far more likely to make claims for every piddling little rattle, leak, or squeak because they have paid top-dollar for the warranty and want some of it back. I bet most claims are really faults that should have been repaired by the owner, or mechanic during service.

Now; what about a really interesting survey that asks extended warranty customers how they fared with the warrantor and whether they are satisfied?

I just have small point about warranty claims. When I got my Disco (the other one) new back in 95, I only had two warranty issues in the two years I owned it. The front sunroof leaked, slighty. A tube of goo would've fixed it but the dealer replaced the entire sunroof....

This 'claim' had no effect on the vehicle's performance, but would've been a significant issue, $ wise.

Never did get the cruise control sorted tho'..... it 'hunted' at speed. on off on off on off , grrrr, was really annoying...
