I know that it isn't possible yet for anyone to have owned a D3 or TD5 Defender for 20 years, but I couldn't help noticing that at least two of the vehicles in the 20+ group are SIII's.
I wonder how much chance there is that anyone who bought their new LR in the last few years will still have it in 20 (or 23) years time.

Unfortunately I think there are a number of things that will make it harder for you to keep your new(ish) vehicle going for 20 years.
For a start, as engines and other bits become more hightech, it becomes harder to get away with things you used to be able to do on SIII or older engines. I read an article about one of the first crossings of the Nullabor, early last century. The gudgeon pin on one cylinder failed. They found that one of their screwdriver shafts was about the same size, so they cut a bit out, fitted it and completed their trip. Bet you couldn't do that with your engine. I couldn't even do that with the SIII.
You can still buy new spares for SIs and for model T Fords. I bet you won't be able to buy spares for your vehicle in 50 years time and probably not in 20 years.
Another real possibility is that in an attempt to clean up the atmosphere or to prop up the automotive manufacturing industry, regulations or taxes will be changed so that owning a 10 year old vehicle is uneconomic or illegal. I believe it happens in other countries already.

Soon I'll be into the 12th year of Disco-ownership. Not always unchallenged, but as in marriage, the occasional disagreement only strenghtens the bond...
