    Thrown in the deep end

    Hi Guys
Ive had one of the best weeks at work at the shire, first week back since easter.Did 2 days on the grader before going on holidays, get back and no1 grader driver is on holidays.
The boss was going to drive the other grader as the work involves re-aligning gravelling and re-shaping dangerous corners.I was to go out and learn my maintenece grading.Maintence grading is a matter of running the dirt from one side of the road to the other. This other work is big boys stuff in comparrison.Got to use the slope meter to get the cambers correct ant the eye to see where you need to shift the dirt.
I told the boss I want to do it,only one way to learn get in and do it.Well monday was tough, tuesday a tad better, wed good today BLITZED IT My workmates are patting me on the back bigtime, really enjoying the challenge, pitty the crap pay,I get $11 a week more going up from truck to grader what a joke,$17.08 per hour sucks!!!!But Im getting training for work that they cant get good operators for.
When I told them I would take the maintence grader job on I didnt want to get stuck on it.Told them give me a month and I will be better than the construction grader driver and want the construction position,I reckon Ive gone around him already
The boss tells me today he has a contact,if I want to work in Perth $28hr as a learner final trim grader driver.
    TEMPTING!!!!

Congrats LA, work is a **** load more enjoyable when you are challenged and you learn new things, nothing worse then being stuck in a rut doing the same old **** day in and day out. Sounds like you will be Australias number one grader driver soon. They will have you contruction race tracks soon.

the reason boys in the mine construction in the North West get $120,000 to $150,000 per annum is simple they work a 13 hour day 9 days straight and are away from home for 5 weeks at time and then have a week at home before repeating the whole thing again.

They also get $160 week if they dont go on strike or take industrial action and its paid as lum sum at end of employment on site.

They also get $50 week severance redundancy pay which is paid at end of employment on site.

Goldfields Mines around Kalgoolie get paid less and always have and will then Iron Ore MInes

Projects in the South West get roughly what North West mine boys do, but overall paid slightly less as south west deemed to have livng attractions compared to North West heat and flies.

Plenty of jobs in mining construction work for the next 7 years on the projects announced as going ahead

Sounds good mate - you will have to drop in for a Beer is you are up here. Will they give you somewhere to stay during the week or do you have to sort it yourself?
