I was sceptical about it too until I saw it myself. I have shot a lot of feral cats but they are nowhere near as big as the panther I saw at my farm at the back of Lithgow between Bathust and Sofala. The dam thing always seem to be about when the rifle is back in the shed.

Did squeeze a round off about 18 months ago but it was raining and I missed. It must have come close though as it jumped about 5 foot in the air.

Is that old flogger still around?
I thought that had been scrapped during the 1970's. I seem to recall reading about it one morning smocko, HMAS Cerberus, I was in the engineering shop.
Must have been 1975 mid year, Australasian Post. At that time the vets reckoned the poor thing had to have died of old age and loneliness, some time in the 1960's. IF IT HAD existed at all.

The American unit Mascot part is true. As for the cat itself?
Ever seen a Nullabor Ferral Cat. The size of a stocky Bull Terrier.
Ever under go a special "recognition and identification" course?

What that is, is a plain old common or garden variety "Ferral Cat".

Yes Gloria, they do get very big, very tough, and mean as.
About 30 years ago, the kid brother caught one, in a rabbit trap, out in the Adelaide Hills backwoods.
It took off up the hill, on three legs, it left one foot behind in the trap, with the brothers Hatchet Axe, buried in its head.

I may be wrong, I think they have an on going cat problem in Victoria.
At about the same time as the Post article, was another, about a sweet little old lady, and her endearing habit of sitting on the front porch, with a shot gun across her knees.
Her idea was, any cat off the verandah, is Ferral, and must be shot.
Dear sweet little old lady. I grew fond of her, I miss her clarity of attitude.

    Shorty.

    Works for me.
I love the native animals of this island home of ours.

I do NOT like cats. Out here in the Mallee, around every stock trough.
Littered with wings of Grass Parrots, Mallee Ringnecks, Crested Pidgeons.

The cats lie in ambush under the trough. Can't shoot, water vital.

Dog likes cats, just can't eat a whole one.

You're right though, I can't recall "Tabby" or "Prussian Blue", as varieties of Panther.

    Shorty.

A few years ago another tv programme ran (amateur) footage of a sandy coloured large cat. It was sighted on the southern outskirts of Brisbane, but the outcome? I seem to recall it was passed off as a 'very large' feral.

I don't have a probo with the basic idea of these and other animals existing on this land. I was standing on a hill a bit north of Kyogle recently, looking west for a while. I was thinking if I travelled due west, it would be possible to not pass thru any town and my reason for stopping would be a dunking in the Indian Ocean.

There's a lot of land out there and very few humans...

    Aha,
so you know the area well then, been to hells Hole a few times, you would probably know the mate from Trunkey and my mate from Blayneys wife who comes from neville, small world.
Aside from the defleeced sheep there are 'things' in that part of the world.

Let's not forget, we are supposed to have our own version of Yeti or Bigfoot.

    Maybe it's his cat.

Most of the larger feral cats I have seen have normally been dark in colour normally grey, grey/black or black. My Aunty lost a Siamese down in Naracoorte at another Aunty/Uncles farm a few years back. Poor little skinny thing. They did find it nearly 12 months later on the farm. Had been living rough. Body mass had increased about 4 times in this time and was all muscle. Living in the wild must do their fitness well. Took nearly 2 years to get it back to a normal Siamese resembelance/shape.
Any cat in the bush is feral and should be shot along with feral dogs.
MM have not been shooting for years, feel the urge again.
Biggest skin I have seen was at a guys shop in Kalgoorlie and nose to tail was a bit over 5 foot. Big cat. About 1/4 the size again to the biggest I have shot.
