don't want to get picky, but shouldn;t there be a wheel under that front O/s guard makes it a bit hard to drive doesn;t it.

ahhh yesss the infamous black soil... whats it like under the crust? pray you never find out....

Fastest bug out OSS (operation support squadron) of 1 armd regt ever did was after siting every vehicle (ARVMS, APCs, R series macks w 20t trailers mogs w 8t trailers and numerous landrovers of various types) and after I was driving in a star picket to take a clark mast stay (guy wire for a bigg ass portable antenna) hit it twice with the dolly on to have it vanish leaving a thick greasy tar like mud seeping up through a star picket shaped hole.


as the mack wrecker (last vehicle) was coming out of the hide you could see the front tyres pushing a bow wave of soil that was dry and a little grassy, the bogie wheels were wet the front trailer bogie was muddy and the rear bogie was up to the rims. Fortunately the 20t plant trailer was empty but you could hear the WORM (warrent officer Recovery Mechanic) on the radio telling the driver to just keep it going strait, floor it and dont change gears what ever your in is working, you'll make it.....

Other types of soils including some reactive clay soils can be just as deceptive.
A few years ago I pulled off the road a little way out of Yass to collect some firewood in the trailer and the SIII.
There had been no rain for a week or more and the surface was quite firm. In fact the front tyre, the rear tyres and trailer tyre in succession barely left an impression.
Manoeuvring around some small trees involved reversing over some of my wheel tracks. This left a small impression, but not the sort of thing you would worry about.
Driving forward on the wheel tracks was a disaster. The rear wheels of the SIII immediately broke through the crust and settled on the diff.
I tried digging under the wheels to make room for something substantial to support the tyres and found that even though the top 100 to 150mm was firm, the soil underneath was about the consistency of custard.
A lot of the soil around the district was like that. It could be weeks after rain; the top could be firm, even dry and underneath was soup.
A bit of local knowledge about the characteristics of the soils can help avoid embarassment.

theres also a phenomonon known as "Surface liquifaction" to get excited about..

IF you know of an area that has spots suseptable to it get a convoy going with a newer rover up front, a series as the #2 and then some poor joker in a cruiser/any other brand you dont like as the #3 I can just about guarentee that if you keep 50m spacing he will get stuck every time...

Ive seen a crane tipped over because of this phenomonon..

Mud and sand means maintenance.

The bundy sticker on the bonnet says it all!
