I can't say I've really explored that area but there's a couple of trips detailed in "4WD Treks Close to Sydney" that might be up your alley.
Hi,
Can any body help me out, would like to plan a 4wd weekend trip to the hunter valley (inland). Any ideas on camp sites, tracks and things to do in that region.
Cheers

G'day TheEntertainer
I would suggest that you send Dinty a PM as he lives in Cessnock
cheers
I could explain heaps uh stuff in the Wattos (watagans) but I'm assuming you want to head further inland. I'll ask around, know a few folks hiding in their, and see if they come up with some goodies.
Is this an attempt to keep the missus happy too? I can just hear the explanation: Yes hunny, we can visit all the wineries on the way...
G'day All, T.E. I'm afraid I won't be able to help you out with info re tracks and trails in the Hunter Valley, I do know that the Wattagans have some V/hard tracks, did most of those in the late 60's using a VW based machine Kombi reverse torque g/box and chains, also the same in the Barrington Tops did all those tracks etc in the very early 70's in my Series Land Rovers, (I don't do much 4 wd'ing these days apart from the odd run to Stockton Beach), most of the tracks in the Tops can be done by car, IMHO that area is ruined by that fact, there are some very easy tracks in most of the State Forests in and around Cessnock some you would get really stuck if it were wet and it's supposed to rain this week, but I have always stayed out of the bush when wet "Tread Lightly", without putting anyone in Matt aka 'Dobbo' might know of some other tracks in and around Lake Macquarie and the back of Mt Sugarloaf, hope that was of some help cheers Dennis![]()
It depends what your idea of fun is, lots of things to do. A good trip would be starting off down near Windsor over Wisemans ferry and head through the Watagan's up to Freemans Waterhole, Head over Mt Vincent the hard way and enter Cessnock to "zee Wineries", taste the cheeses chocs and vino then head over to Scone, spend the night there. Then over the Barringtons towards Gloucester, see the sights have a bit of whitewater rafting and such. Come out onto the Freeway at Stroud Rd, over to Anna Bay traverse Stockton from North to South. Leave Stockton on Sunday arvo and head back South to the Gong.
If done in the next few months you could get Mud, Snow and Sand in the one trip.
Yeah, as dobbo said, depends on what you want to do...
some people go to the Hunter to taste wine![]()

Misses, yes always got to think about them, keep all the players happy and you can drive longer.
Watagans, been there a few time, great place, the one that stick is white mans ridge with roof rack and rooftop tent to keep things interesting. Don't forget the mad hole after turning right of the dirt road heading down.
Back to the hunter, whine tasting, river rafting and Stockton in one weekend, sounds great but is it viable.
I don't mind driving far but sitting in a patrol, or toyo is 'n bit hard, disco seats must be the best on the market.
More inland is where I want to go, have not been there so I'm pretty open minded. Have been to Barringtontops, great place, would not mind passing through again.
cheers and thanks for all the info so far.
Hate smooth dirt road....
