RACV for Cape York trip

Another thing to watch with the State club set ups, RAA, RACV etc. They used to have a weight restriction for recovery, which didn't cut it for your average loaded 4WD. I approached RAA about this and they happily gave me a covering letter stating they would recover my loaded disco regardless of it being over the policy weight. RAA would recover me from any gazetted road, this could be as rough as guts and they would recover me. Well that was when I signed up years ago, come to think about it, I also reminded them that if they didn't I would have to leave my expensive 4WD at the side of the track and it probably would get trashed at the side of a track,,, and they were the insurers ;) They have always come the goods for me though, very pleased with them.

Land rover assist was nothing but unbelievably helpful while the Disco was under warranty. could not fault them :),,, in fact I actually felt sorry for them a couple of times when they moved the earth to see me sorted,, only to be let down, embarrassed, by there absolutely useless dealer network of a couple of years ago.:mad:

I rejoined LRA after the warranty expired as they were cheaper then RACQ for the same cover( when all said and done they are one in the same).But over the years I have found that with any of these providers you have to be imobile before they will come, be a long drive in limp mode from Bamaga to Cairns.

Yep I was immoble and the LR Assist telephone support couldn't even give me a number to contact. I also could not speak to anyone at a more senior level and was basically give the run around.

RQCQ will recover you from any road shown on ANY publically availalbe map...

.pdfs of local national parks do not count.. the natmap topgraphical maps do..


RACQ will be easier to get on with if you get their comprehensive vehicle inspection carried out as a new memeber PRIOR to getting the policy for your long trip....

I make it a habit of sending them my travel itinery along with a rough map including the major townships and having them send it back with their branches or in the case of a spot in the road an authorised repair/revocery agency.

about 50% of the time i get a friendly chat with an operator and the details inside of 48 hours.. the others i get a chat that says we appreciate your effor t but dont bother your covered just ring the center number and we'll do the rest.

hmmm the P38 Range Rover chewed the ZF auto box on me comming home from Gipsland, made it to the toll gates at the bottom of the adelaide hills and realised that slight vibration had turned into no drive in any direction.

I knew the car wasn't going anywhere, first tech got there 15 minutes after I called, RAA, had a look and saw the breather had pushed out lots of fluid, said its too hard for him he will call the other guy who has more experience (after I made it clear just send a tow truck). 45 mins later a tow truck pulls up, asks me if I need help, then the RAA guy pulls up, spends 20 minutes going over it :eek: with the towie looking amused, then they both just agree to put it on the flatbed and take me the 7 k's home - got home at 4am :)

The only other issue I had was they refused to jump start me as they only carry upto 700CCA batteries and the book says my car needs an 850????? My mums Astra jumped the rangie once!

they wont as if you have dead flat batteries and try to start it with their jump gear on you can blow the top off of YOUR batteries which means they are responsable for the damage and the liability....

We have been trying to get someone from LRA to come to a club meeting to explain exactly what they will and will not do. A couple of members have had bad experiences with lack of assistance and they were only up in the high country.

As to Racq or the likes we would not travel without their top cover. Examples, we were towed from tablum to brisbane for free when the water pump went. Free hire car when we were rear ended in Noosa. Parents had 5 days accomodation and car rental when their camper blew a head in Victoria. Friend had vehicle shipped back from the Cape by ship to cains when the auto went.

Bloody good service. However you have to know your rights and be forceful and ask for the supervisor if you don't get what you want. The people on the phone can be pretty thick.

You will also find that the Mechanic at Seica is an ex land rover mechanic and also the RACQ guy so the breakdowns take priorty
