Thread: Crappy bolts...Part II (With Photos!)

Thought Id take some photo's of the recovery points on the TJM Alloy winch bar on my disco.

These have been tried and tested and are mounted with 3 HT 12mm bolts from the bar to the mounting plate but theres a spare hole for some reason as well as 2 1/2" HT bolts that mount through the chassis but the bracket is on both sides of the rail so the load on the bolts is halved aswell as the load is distributed across the whole chassis rail instead of just 1 side, I have to fit a new winch cradle as the one my mate made me was crap and the welds broke so Ive given it back.

It only supported across the front and only 2 small bolts in the side anyway so it wasnt doing much.

This shows a reasonable recovery point That has been used for both soft and hard recoveries but there are better ones on the market that I as well as anyone going 4wding should invest in.

Thinking more about this thread when it comes to recovery points they are a bit like brakes if you really aren't sure you should have them fitted by a specalist.

I was not confident enough to have a go at fitting mine to my D2 so coughed up the money and I went to a specalist.

This is a list of bolt head markings and what they mean, by this the bolts holding my Bullbar on are medium grade rather than HT but not mild steel.
