Everyone seems to have given you heaps of advice. Remember the Defender box and clutch is a lot heavier that a car unit.

Try grasping the gear lever knob with your finger tips - don't hold it tight in your palm.

Jack the lad,

firstly, welcome and don't be shy, we all like to answer questions around here, some of us have a severe case of verbal diarrhea...

As everyone has said, slow and steady catches the monkey with the R380 box, and you actually have probably the heaviest clutch pedal in the defender range, as the Tdi was heaps lighter.

Hope you enjoy driving it, You will probably end up with either it or one like it later i suspect!

totally agree... it's like tai-chi... just go easy and if you use fingers it'll slip into gear eventually on it's own accord.

There is lots of good advice to be had here.
My son is about to go for his P's and had his first driving lessons in the Defender. He had to learn that she's no lamborghini. You can pull her out of gear as you raise your right foot and push the clutch then just ease it gently into the next gear and ease the clutch out. Don't drop it!!!!
My son did well because the drive train has a fair pit of backlash "slop" in it and he was able to make a smooth gear change in no time by being gentle and getting the timing right! If you can get smooth changes some of the time then it's just more practice.

My 12yo Boy gets to have a play from time to time,he just about has the D2 5 speed sorted as well as mum has!!!!The guys on the Dwellingup trip got to see him in action.He has done a fair bit of playing in the town gravel pit WHEN WE WERE ALLOWED IN THERE!!!
He cant wait to play in the auto Rangie,AND HE LOVES V8s!!!!!

Ok while we are on the topic of L's people driving Land Rovers, how do I heel and toe in my Discovery? I watched a video of someone using their toe on the brake and their heel on the accelerator but I believe this isnt correct. The heel should be used for the brake and the toe for the accelerator, should it not?
