Does shaving lead to a potential to run dry on big lean angles? Or would you consider the possibility negligable at low speeds?

It seems that there are some other differences with the P38 diff. Apparently the pinion bearings are different also, but I'm not sure if that means that the pinion design is also different.
Certainly doesn't - Series 2a Rover diff went through (from memory) two different sets of pinion bearings, and three different housings - but the pinion remained the same part number right through, as did the Crown wheel of course, since they are matched sets with one number.

Sounds fair enough. It seems that the P38 diff has a large bearing at the pinion head and also has a large bearing at the tailshaft flange end also, rather than a smaller one that the Rover diff apparently has.
Well the Rover front does fit the P38 rear..
Only a stopgap solution til the right parts appear, but no noises and no vibration so far.

Well I got up to 90 kph at lunchtime, vibration still there. Back to square one.
Dunno whether its still in the diff, or elswhere. I'll try another set of wheels & tyres tonight.
Both diffs done recently. Both propshafts done a few weeks ago. Both trailing arm & radius arm bushes are shagged, I was leaving these until after an upcoming desert trip. Would they cause a vibration at speed?

Trailing arm and radius arm bushes should not cause vibration - wander and sloppy handling yes, but I can't see how they could cause vibration. Unless it is the front wheels shimmying (which is probably swivel preload) vibration just about has to be something rotating, usually a prop shaft or an out of balance wheel.
You have made sure the front prop shaft is correctly phased have you? It is not assembled with the yokes on the shaft parallel as is normally the case, and people not famioliar with the Defender have been known to assemble them incorrectly.
