Thread: 95 Range Rover

The P38 rangie is a superb machine both on and off-road but pre-99 is a bit of a lottery in what you're going to get. My Dad has a 98 4.0 model and has spent about $7K on the Rangie over 3 year period, mostly wear and tear. (Rangie has about 193K's on the odometer).

I do like the P38 and would love to own one, til the old man gets another large repair bill of which to be quite honest I woukld struggle to pay for (although in fairness there hasn't been too many of recent ).

But for me I like cheap, simple and no bull**** especially when it goes all pear shaped off-road if the invevitable happens. EFI is as high tech as I like to go and even that does my head in at times (bloody lucas crap ) but each to there own

Disco-B, Mine is a 1999 Thor (BWM) injected 4.0SE with the HSE bits (sun roof, leather, proper alloys etc). Things that will need fixing : the air block & compressor rebuild is a once in about every 80kms service. Takes about 4hrs from start to finish (I am no mech.) and you will need a little silicon grease and a bottle of Loctite. I check compressor piston & bushes every 10,000k with a little silicon grease each time. Cost of full O-Ring & compressor kit ranges from $200 to $250A. Easy fix for a great system. Air springs are an easy replace although for ease have LR mech do it. They will cost you about $180 plus tax and they should last about 160,000kms. Coil springs are reliable and possibly suitable if you want to lift the 38, otherwise stick with Air! Issues to look for are the heater core O-Ring replacement (needs dash removal to fix), Hi-Lo range selector motor which ceases & then voltage surge fries the ECU ($1100 fix), occasional front end issues with tie rod ends, pan hard rods wearing out prematurely, ETC axle sensors loosing their touch and last but not least, the age ol' RR problem of steering box issues. Mine has had these probs and seems to go fine now. I forgot to mention that BMW with their infinite wisdom during their raiding ownership of LR, decided to run a twin cam low viscosity oil in a 1965 Buick V8.......result, chattery rockers! Make sure post 1999 models have had 20w50 min grade oil in donk. Apart from the above, I find services as simple as my wife's '04 Oil Burner Pajero and the RR is a whole lot more fun and takes me further when at work. Also, put a set of BFG A/T's on. They are so much quieter than the stocko Michelin's and will wear so much better.
