    Pimping My Ride

Just spent the long weekend putting the (almost) finishing touches on my SII in preparation for the big desert trip at the end of June.

The roofrack will also hold the 2nd spare.

The 150mm pipe will hold the tent, it's 2.5 m long so I'll just roll the tent into a long tube and carry it in the pipe. Saves trying to squeeze into a too small bag then have it leak inside the car.

The cargo storage had the Waeco at the left, 2 x 20 litre (Willow) in the middle and 2 x Elna wire baskets at right. It's built from 20mm & 12mm MDF board, with marine carpet stuck with contact adhesive.

Cargo barrier is standard 1/2 size Landy original.

I got the Waeco charge point accessory (it came in a package deal with the fridge, cover and battery). It connects direct to the battery with the wire running through the firewall on drivers side, behind the plastic panel at driver's feet, then through the door sill channel to the back. Easy to install and there's enough wire to do the job right.

It's a really clever gadget. You can select for it to power up either all the time (in which case the fridge has to sense when voltage has dropped and turn off), or to power up only when the engine is running. It apparently uses a voltage-sensing relay to do this so there's only the two wires from the battery needed.

Still to come - radio (GME TX 3440) and 16x8 rangie wheels (will fit BFG muddies).

noice ..very noice ...... I'm always amazed at the inventiveness of people on this site ....

couple of small things I noticed .in your pics .....are you thinking of doing anything with the tyres before you go they look pretty much like std. road tyres there ....

and if not done already you might like to think about some sort of locking arrangment to stop the metal baskets sliding back and damaging your rear door trim ....

Turn the box on the rack 90 degress, it will reduce the drag up top.

    Other than that nice ride.

    Hi Wayne,

Yep, will change the 18" Goodyears for Rangie rims (16x8) & fit BFG ATs or muddies 255/70R16. Not sure which ones. but I figured muddies 'coz if I have a second set of wheels for off road, may as well be agressive :-)

Tombraider the problem is that I have to fit a second spare up there, & the only way that can happen is to put the box cross-ways. I got the rack cheap so the size is sorta 'fixed'.

Yes if I had read your first post properly I would have realised that .... ...if you're going desert the muddies may tend to dig in maybe look at a less agressive tyre maybe the BFG AT or the the Cooper AT or even the ATR .... bit quieter for you for the 90% of driving you will do on the blacktop getting there. .....

    G,day Hunchy
I'd stick Goodyear Wrangler MTR's on. I reckon there a bloody good tyre. You couldn't give me a set of BFG all terrain. Maybe it,s just me but they have a bad habit of getting holes in them.

    Hagus & wayne,

Thanks for the info. I'm still trying to figure out what the best tyres are. Most of my offroad is Noosa North Shore and Fraser, But damn there's so much to see in SEQ I figured some muddies as my second set would cover more bases.

I'm getting the Rangy rims from a mate, they have stuffed Michelins on so they need to be changed. So what's it to be BFG muddies or ATs? Goodyear MTRs? Cooper STs?

Problem with the MTRs is the rims are 8" wide & it doesn't look like there's a good match for size. Closest is 245/75R16 but these are 40mm bigger diameter & I don't have any lift. Also I don't know if they fit on 8" rims 'coz the Goodyear website is c**p. So I was looking for something close to original size & 255/70R16 seems about right (although they are still 25mm bigger diameter).

The current 18" tyres are Goodyear Wrangler HP and these are great, so no problems with the brand

    Hi Hunchy
I just fitted MTRs to my D2,235/85x16 fit well but I do have a 2" spring lift.
245/75x16 will fit a standard D2 no problem at all,7" in the min rim width 8" is fine.
The MTRs have a 3 ply sidewall.Found mine are no noiser than the 255/70x16 Cooper S/Ts I just removed.
On the subject of the 255/70x16 Cooper S/T be aware they are not light truck construction, they are passenger construction,so not as heavy duty as others, their 245/75x16 S/T is light truck construction.I only found out a couple of weeks after buying them!!!!
Done 22000ks,tread is down about 1/4 compared to the spare which is still new.Not had any dramas off-road,they are pretty reasonable, there are better tyres though.
Mate has MTRs on his 80 series tojo, done 10000ks mainly hwy, still look brand new.

Thanks Andy. Good to know the 245/75R16 BFG muddies fit. They are 38mm bigger so that gives me a benchmark. Although the website says 7.5" rim is the widest
