    new tv/set top box woes.

    just bought a LCD tv with a set top box thingy.As its all chinese made, instructions are woeful and dont actually include how to join the two together.As I understand it, aerial goes into box and then into tv, and box and tv are linked by 3 Rf cables. Does anyone know which sockets connect the two? Tv has a set of HDMI sockets as well but box doesn't, if thats of any use.

    Plugs should be colour coded.

    Yellow = Video
    Red = Right Channel
    White = Left Channel

    Should match TV for one of the AV-in

    If the box has Red/Green/Blue plugs these are component and I would use this (with appropriate cable) for the video signal if the TV has the inputs over the composite (yellow) video cable.

    Here's a pic of two set top boxes. On the top one there are four rf/aerial sockets with an rs232 port to update firmware via computer. In the middle are the left and right audio RCA sockets next again are video RCA socket with SPDIF RCA socket below. Next along is a S-video cable, and finally power cable.

    On mine I have sound through the red and white RCA and video through the S-video. S-video should give you a better quality picture than video through an RCA.

    You might also have a SCART plug, they're easy to recognise, they are almost as big as a toaster.

    I find that I have lots of interference from other appliances, so I've recently put a ferrite thingy on the power cord, about $7 from Dick Smith, made a difference, stopped the picture from breaking up into little boxes every time the dishwasher switched from one cycle to the next.

    Aerial from outside to set top box, RCA/S-video from set top box to TV. If you are only viewing through the set top box that would be all you need.

    Cheers

    If you're not going to use the TV's tuner ( ie only using the digital tuner in the STB which is all you should need ) there is no need to run the aerial cable to the TV.

    Basically its aerial into the STB and then whatever type of video and audio signal you want out of the STB and into the TV. Component video which is the three coloured plugs in one cable will give you the best quality. Otherwise use S video ( another type of lead ) or just plain composite video as said above, but the pic won't be as good . Oh if you use component video, you'll need to run a seperate audio feed from STB to TV too.

    If you want to add DVD recorders etc it gets al ittle more complicated.

    thanks all, got it working but, although picture is great I keep getting glitches in the sound and pixels in the picture, totally intermitent. Some stations better then others, but all seem affected.We do have digital here but it seems the signal might not be that good, any other suggestions??Have perfect signal and reception on the old system.

    ..pixelation indicates poor or intermittent signal ... or interference .
    ...check your antenna etc is all OK no rust etc disconnect the terminals on the antenna end spray some WD40 on and reconnect. Make sure there is no water in or damage to the coax cable.
    ..but if you had good signal on the analogue the digital should be better.
    - I get interfrence/pixelation on my STB every Christmas ... starts jsut after dark...worked out it was the bl**dy neighbour's Christmas flashing lights

    your external aerial needs to be good and setup/tuned correctly otherwise you will loose transmission intermittantly causing pixelated reception. There are other digital TV forums that cover this subject. Even on a windy day if your aerial mast moves in caused signal break up. But once setup properly you get DVD quality viewing.

    Get one of these from Dick Smith.

    I wrapped my power cord around it 4 times. Just a bit of overkill.

    There are smaller ones that only cost a couple of dollars.

    Dunno about the antenna thing, I've got some old antenna that I pretty much threw up on the roof. It does help that I've got an uninterrupted view to the north.

    Cheers
    Simon
