I deal with emergency situations, so it is quite often not possible to be explanatory or polite, but sharp and to the point when dealing with risk or lives. In training yes, time is permitted to explain how and why but not all the time. But yes you are correct about the message being lost, but this is usually from ignorance or arrogance being defensive not proactive. No body likes being told they are wrong, especially in public.

As CraigE said no-one likes being told they are wrong in public, so they tend not to listen. I know that makes them ignorant, arrogant, illogical, immature and a whole lot of other things, but it doesn't alter the fact that the message was lost on them.
If you say something in a way that the listener doesn't understand or say it in such a way that they stop listening, you have wasted your time.
What is more important; saying that D***k is an idiot or having people understand what is wrong with his recommendation and how to avoid the problems it is likely to create?
I happen to think that the point Drivesafe was trying to make was so important that it was a great pity that his point seemed to get lost in all the other discussion.
I hope drivesafes warning doesn't fall on deaf ears....
My opinion? Reading thru it all, a bit heavy drivesafe, but I don't know the Derek person or his past - sounds like a 'consumer affairs - oh+s' type of issue...
re the 2nd battery installation question -
methinks that anyone supplying such 'equipment'
would have a 'duty of care' and may well be liable for many things if the vehicle actually burnt; like replacement of vehicle - and compensation for
all forms of inconvenience and other disaster - including loss of life.
However, given drivesafes warning, heavy or otherwise, none can take this type of installation too lightly.

Hi folks, for those of you who have not come across him, your lucky because he usually tries to take over what ever thread he is on so he can sell his wares.
The problem is, he has only been dealing in 12 volt automotive gear for about 18 months but to try to win customers over, he puts himself forward as an expert in the field when in fact a 1st year auto electrical apprentice, in his first week on the job will know more.
Derek pays to advertise on Exploreoz and I’m not trying interfere with his business but the way he posts what is, in many cases, nothing more than crap, is a case of buyer beware.
In this case if the buyer is not aware and not warned, the buyer could very well kill himself by taking notice of Derek’s drivel.
The irony is that I have seen him try his crap on other sites ( none of which he pays to advertise on ) and the members on the site have driven him off.
The last time that I know of was on Overland and the moderators never got a chance to shut him down, the other readers did it for them.
I’m not trying to justify how I treated him, he’s one of these creeps that thinks he can sneak a few freebies in on a site and because he’s Derek, he can get away with it. Boy has he been wrong.

BTW, I posted a question for the moderator and his lack of a response shows he is obviously more interested in site profits.
DS, couldn't see a problem with what you were saying, as apposed to what Derek was recommending seems more directed at electrical than auto electrical.

I'm with you drivesafe - having done plenty of audio installs including some with 5-6 batteries (true!) and understand totally where you are coming from on the technical end..... but some of the posts come across to an impartial reader as more playing the man than the ball.
IMHO, you could have made him look like a goose to all and sundry easily, by drawing him in and letting him hang himself with his misinformation.
I personally believe that you could have approached it differently for the sake of not making people cry:dbcry:, unfortunatly it does come across to a lamen that you have a vendetta against him:D. I do believe that Derek should be responsible for his actions and if he is advertising on the site and handing across information the can lead to malfunction, fire and death that he should be held liable on a criminal level. I also belive that the people running the site do have a duty of care that if they are condoning his advice for financial gain that they can be held liable if they have censored advise contradicting that of Derek that could have saved the life of the people receiving the information.
Oh and when it comes to saftey being nasty is sometimes the only way to get the message across;)
Wow! How many times do you see the "reaction" put on trial and judged - without any concern regarding the cause of the "reaction".
Drivesafe has reacted to what is basically fraud - and in a manner he is the one that has been put on trial. Glad to see that he is innocent:angel:
And of course the real culprit goes free - again. Read the papers - no, don't bother - this story is too frequent too rate a mention anymore.

As someone who was brought up with no exposure to the real world (my parents are academics) and works behind a desk, I very much rely on experts as I don't have a hope in hell of understanding it all. and while we are all cycnical of marketing material, these web forums give a false sense of security.
I assume (at my own risk) that advertisers on AULRO have credibility because the moderator of the site seems well respected by the members, and he would not risk this respect by selling out to someone not worthy. I do not extend that assumption to sites managed by corporations. But some people would.
My point is that the moderators play a very important role, not just keeping people in line. And the moderator at ExploreOz sems at fault, not because he tried to stop DriveSafe attacking the man, and not because he sold advertising to a shoddy vendor (as mags do that all the time) but because he allowed the vendor to interact as an expert. This would be like a mag allowing the advertiser to write an advice column.
And yes I do know it is my responsibility and no-one else is to blame but me if I follow poor advice, the bottom line is that at some point I have to trust someone else.
And while I spend a lot of time going through old threads to do identify those people who are respected by people who are respected themselves, many people would not and rely on the first "expert" who helps them out.
Which is why I am totally glad to see people like Drivesafe and others who chimed in at the end jump in. We all know the cliche about evil happening cause good people say nothing.
I decided ages ago that DriveSafe knew what he was talking about because I spend a lot of time reading old threads and also because he has never tried to sell any of his stuff, which is why I will be buying some of his stuff very shortly.
