Going to the Alpine region?
Cold? Man it has been cold here lately. -2.1 under the verandah last night. Probably - 5 in the paddock. The perma frost has set in the top paddock. (this is when it doesn't thaw out at all. )
Last week I thought I should drive the Patrol into town to get some Fuel. (Lay off I am between Land rover's at the moment!) Since I sold the TDI Disco I thought I would give the Patrol a run. It spent summer with a full tank of fuel with fire fighting gear on the back. Now it is June and I am still on the same tank. Shows how much use it gets. I got to the end of the driveway before it conked out. The problem? No Alpine mix diesel. Alpine mix is sold from April till September up here. A few hours to warm up and it was as good as gold. The problem is the diesel gets Waxy and clogs up the filters and no fuel gets through.
This morning I met some hunters that spent last night camping. One of them had a water bottle next to his swag under a tarp and it froze! One of the blokes had the same problem as he got Fuel in Benalla which wasn't Alpine mix.
So If you are going to the colder regions make sure you get some local fuel if you have a diesel.
Cheers
Gillie

Yep. The advice is to just top up your tank with the alpine mix once in the cooler regions. Catches a lot of people out up at the snow fields.

Good advice about the Alpine diesel. I have had freinds with the same problem whilst away 4wding.
On the subject of cold temperatures, I was camping at the Horseyards on the Moroka River a few years back. Needed to get up in the night (which is something I really try to avoid on cold nights) as I had too much to drink earlier in the night. The temp guage on the fridge says -4, outside temp -8.

Spent the same night at Oodnadatta with Numptys missus (and Numpty
) I remember we had to wait for the tents to thaw before we could pack them up.
Coldest night though was at Bendethra a few years ago with a -8, only one degree different, but couldn't get warm no matter what. Given there was around 20 years between Ood and Bendethra my theory is you feel the cold more as you get older

Another trip I was camped at Mt Tamboritha whilst trailbike riding. My seat had a heavy cover of ice in the morning so I got a stick to break the ice off. Unfortunately I must of hit it too hard and the vinyl of the seat broke!

Being the good bloke that I am I was doing the vacuuming this morning. To look outside and see a waterfall coming off the roof. On closer inspection one of the pipes had burst for the solar heating on the pool. I reckon the black tupes had frozen and when the pump kicked in it burst the pipe. Must of been running for around 5 min looking at the level of water in the pool. Twice we have had the fire fighing hose on the shed burst in the frost. Ball valves are the worst. The water freezes and expands and has no where to go and bursts the valves. The wife went and checked some lambs on a neighbouring property today to find that there hot water service had exploded in the frost. I thought the world was suppose to be getting warmer?
