I am looking at a Discovery, 97 TDI and was looking for opinions on the relaiability of this engine. It is low kms, 130,000 and regularly serviced with no off road or towing. A Rover tech advised me to steer clear of the TDI for electrical problems, but there seems to be plenty of guys that use them off road.
Thanks,
The TDI was a generally mechanical engine no real electrickery problems, I traded mine in at 285000km and it was still going strong with no issues other than a couple of things wearing out. I found it to be the most reliable Landy I have owned, have not had the D3 long enough to rank it yet![]()

Defender 300TDi @ 275k - no problems and going strong. Only ever had timing belts replaced at 100k intervals, oil every 5k, regular filters (oil 10k, air/fuel 20k), and periodic tappet adjustments. No electrical problems at all. Oil seals however are a different matter...

mine is 97 Tdi 205,000 K/m. Only problems it has had are problems I have caused
Maybe the rover tech meant steer clear of the TD5s rather than the older 300Tdi's?
just about 300,000 km ,head gasket can be a problem if you don't watch coolant other wise great, mine is 96 tdi![]()
