    Question Buying a Trailer

    Ladies / Gents,

as a new arrival to this country I am still struggeling with some of the administrative issues, and I would very much appreciate a little help.

I am looking at buying a trailer for my dirt bike, and I found one that looks good to me on Ebay (it will be cash against delivery, so fraud should not be an issue).
The trailer looks very decently made, but I suspect the guy made it himself. Not an issue, however, it was never registered. The seller says he can supply a blue slip, though, but I am a bit unsure if this is enough to get the traier registered. Would I need a certificate from an engineer, or is the blue slip basically a guarantee that all is well with the trailer from a technical perspective? Would I run into problems later on with insurance etc?

    Hoep you can help.
    Cheers

I believe that if the trailer has never been registered it will need to get a compliance plate - I am not sure how this is done - you will need to check with the RTA. While the trailer may be roadworthy it probably cannot be registered (if has never been previously registered) without the compliance plate. The fact it is home build should not be an issue as long as it complies with regulations.

No doubt someone with experience building trailers will be along to give you all the facts.

    Just a thought:

I bought a new 8x5 regular box trailer (Ford hubs, checkerplate floor)
2 years ago for $800 on road, does the job, does lots of jobs...

    Call the RTA on 13 22 13.

A vehicle with a blue slip has either never been registered, been registered in another state/overseas, or has been out of rego for more than three months. A blue slip for a vehicle is enough to get it registered, although the RTA does random inspections of blue-slipped vehicles, and if that happens they may send you back for repairs, etc.

I don't know how this applies to trailers.

Of course, if the fella has a blue slip you could always negotiate sale, if you win auction, to include an extra $$$ for seller to provide it to you registered.

A blue slip is for registering new or trailers that have been out of registration or never registered before, the RTA don't do checks any more unless it's an interstate purchase.

Also it's law that you have to supply a blue or pink slip when selling vehicles or trailers in NSW if they are unregistered.

    The vehicle must be roadworthy.

thanks, baz, that is good information.
i guess that means that the guy a/ must supply a blue slip and b/ must guarantee the trailer is roadworthy.
the next question is what to do if he says it is roadworthy, and it turns out not to be true ...
