    Bike Rack

WHo can recommend a good bike rack to carry two mountain bikes for a Freebie? Not sure if I want the one on the spare wheel, so a tow-bar mounted one might be a better option. Roof racks are kinda out of the question... don't have the roof bars...

    Any ideas, sources?

    Cheers

I bought a cheepy from the local bike shop - they sell the same ones in autopro and supercheap -

Just had a look - no makers label/name on it - or if there is it's hiding.

Thule make a good hitch receiver which I have used once (borrowed from the dealer). Options include:
    • Standard Tow Bar Mount
    • Tow Bar Mount - Folds down to access rear door
    • Tow Bar Mount - Swings away to access rear door i.e. like a spare tyre swing arm

Visit http://www.thule.com.au/products.php and click on Hitch Mount Receivers half the way down the page. It'll open a pdf. They are far from cheap though, I just use a standard A Frame Bike Rack available from your local bikeshop for around $80. Always a few good finds on ebay.

I know a good agent in Melbourne, not sure you're down here though.

    Bike rack

    Hello,

I have just gone through the same delema ('sp). Ended up with a cheap one that mounts on the rear tyre. It also has straps that hook on top, sides, and bottom of my Defender door. Didn't want one that hooks on the tow bar, as I wanted it for some off road work. Tow bar is usually removed for off road work. Am off to Cape York next month, and my 6yo navigator neeeeeeds! his bike.
The advantages of this style are:
    1. Can open the door without removing the rack.
    2. Has secure mounting for securing 3 bikes on the rack.
    3. With the straps, not all the weight is on the tyre.
    4. Holds the rack securly even on corrigations.
    5. The rack can be used on non rear tyre mounted cars. i.e. wagon type.
    6. Easily removed

    Cheers,

    Ken

I can definitely reccomend what not to get. We have one that clamps onto the top bar of the bike that runs between the seat and the neck. It's the same as this one.

    .

Of the 4 bikes we have, only one will fit on the rack. Most of the new bikes don't use round tube and the rack won't fit over these larger oval tubes. A way to get around this is to use one of these telescopic bars.

One of these may be better, but I don't know how it would go off-road.

Don't want to sound like a spoil sport but in NSW if you have a bike rack or anything else that obscures your rego plate you're entitled to a $308 fine and 3 demerit points - it used to be $77 and no points but the RTA 'says' the increase is proportionate to the increase in toll evaders, red light and speed camera dodgers etc... ...and the roads are still crap

So, if you stick one on your LR and it obscures the plate, make sure you get yourself a NSW Bike Rack plate for it....available ONLY from your friendly RTA office

Looking for something for the Flandie and I am not sure if the door can take the weight of 2 bikes.

Tow bar sounds like an OK option but yeah, the top tubes on the bikes are BIG and far from round.

Roof is a bit high and I have no bars (yet).

Might see if the bikes will fit in the back (inside).

Thanks for all the answers - off to see what the local bike shop has.

If I had one on the Flandie, I would. If the old SII was registered and out of storage, I would probably put them on the jerry-can holders. But this is the 'family car'...
