the R380 IMHO is the better option. Carefully turn the input shaft untill the ouputs on the tcase have done at least one full rotation and feel for notching/grating of internal parts keep an ear on it with a stethoscope if you can.

the r380 is the tougher of the 2 boxes and if its not making any unusal noises when hand turned and isnt grabbing when you turn the shaft then Id go the r380.

If you keep an eye out you might get some alot cheaper then that, i have seen r380s in similar nick to what you are talking about for sale for 700 dollars, and lt230s for under 500.

Go visit Pick & Payless wreckers at Tattersall Rd Blacktown - they usually remove the box's from Disco/Rangies as soon as they get them, but they haven't for a while now - there are ( as of last week) 1 xLT77 with a borg warner TC in a 91 RRC, and 1 x R380 with LT230 in a 95 Disco - both V8's. You have to do the spanner work, but it may fit the bill.

Hey some good stuff their guy's thanks. Somehow like the idea of reco'ing my g/box & xfer to keep it original if <2.5 k & it lasts a few hundred thousand kms I guess thats another option.

Just not sure whats the best, this is my 1st landrover 4wd do know I love it,
but only want to do it once

I would go with the R380 personally, as long as it is as good as they say it is!
My worry is that the LT77's had problems with 2nd synchro hub, and an upgraded one is now available. If this isn't factored in to the rebuild, then add another $500 to $600. They also have a tendency to have reverse problems, I E jumping out under load, and if yours is suffering this fate It will require a reverse gear, selector ring and possibly an idler too. More $$$$. I tend to think a good condition later model box will be a better prospect.
Having said all these good things about the R380, we recently had to rebuild one and due to it being run low on oil at some point, required some new mainshaft gears as well as brngs and synchro hubs. This turned a costly job into an expensive one. When buying second hand, remember the word 'warranty' is your friend....
As regards to the LT230, I would ask to have the bottom plate removed ,have a look at the oil condition, and see if the intermediate gear has any endfloat etc.
