My car has been relatively low cost maintenance until the last year. The engine is the only LR made item that has had problems. Most of the maintenance issues have been due to consumables wearing out. That is acceptable even if a tad exxy.

You have been lucky with yours Ron

My dads is a 98 which had the older 4.6 with sleeve issues at 90k.11 thousand bucks for a new engine fitted (newer block). Very nice car to drive and now has 160k on the clock.

    1. Climate has problems with heater (doesn't heat)
    2. Brakes are dangerous. can't get anyone to fix them, must have a leak in the booster as it loses preasure after 10mins. but all the mechanics say its not the booster..no one has any idea..
    3. Whine in the rear, wheel bearings id say.. but need to oxy them out.. fun job
    4. Endless airbag probs. airbags themselves arnt usually the prob. the control box with all the little o-rings leak and hes has that rebuilt 3 times in last 4 years. on his second pump to date. but always has and will sag if left for 2 days
    5. Thermo fans stopped working, cost 700bucks to get a new module or something..didn't fix so just fitted a manual switch.. basically we just switch them on when temp gets up..at least we know that the thermos are working!

Apart from a couple of things its a great car but I'd never own one. My dad says as long as he dosn't drive it, it won't cost him any money to run

To end that- he drove it to brisbane (hadn'tdriven it for nearly 4 weeks), car stopped just over the story bridge. had it towed to Ricks 4x4 in Nerang. Cost nearly 900 bucks for a new fuel pump. After that they found that it wasn't fuel pump and that it needed a new crank angle sensor or something like that..another few hundred bucks..

this is all in the last 1.5 years

But thats how it goes.. not saying they are crap.. just expensive to run

I'd suspect the accumulator. Has it ever been replaced. They do gradually lose charge.

How long does it take after a cold start for the brake warning light to go out? This light operates from brake pressure and the hand brake so to check, you need to release the handbrake before start up.

After switch off, can he hear any noises emanating from the pump, i.e., does it sound like the pump is running down?

Is the heater problem related to the blend motors or the heater core?

The thermo fans rarely ever come on. It could be the trinary pressure switch.

The wheel bearing replacement info is here: http://rangerovers.net/repairdetails...rain/hubs.html

    Cheers Ron

Will sus out the accumulator.. really need to fix this part!

the heater only works on the left side so i guess its the motors..don't wanna know how much that is to fix..prolly not worth the bother

the pressure switch was changed..didn't fix.. so had a normal switch fitted to the dash so can just flick thermos on when it gets hot (eg slow 4x4ing in hot weather) at least we can prevent overheating.

Cheers for the link on wheel bearings .. gonna be a fun job

If it takes around 45 seconds for brake pressure, the accumulator is probably shot. The pump may be. Can he hear the brake pump running after every brake aplication? BTW, the accumulator is very easy to replace, you won't even need to bleed the brakes.

Actually, it's not that hard to do the blend motors. We've written up the procedure for RHD cars at http://rangerovers.net/repairdetails/blendmotor.html

There are a number of related pages which give advice on how to get access to the motors, e.g. binnacle removal, side panel removal, etc.

I'd recommend doing the heater O-rings at the same time.

Re the electric fans, I've only rarely ever heard mine come on. Most P38A owners with whom I've discussed this have said the same thing.

    Cheers again Ron

The thermos used to flick on when getting close to the red on the temp guage..(only when 4x4ing and nearly every week on a certain hill which needs 1st to get up) so we have had the thermos working alot..quite loud.
normal running I doubt they would come on much if at all but when the dial was on the red and realised that the thermos wern't working.. thats why fitted a switch

    Cool

The body kit and wheels really set that car off nicely. If I had a P38 and the kit was not to expensive I would put one on for sure. Looks the goods.

Can't imagine it would be cheap though.
