I would not buy an inverter for a laptop, phone and battery charger/s...
keep everything 12 volt DC and it's much safer and more efficient.
Does anyone have experience with inverters. I need to run a laptop and charge a camera, video and phone.
Could I get away with the 150w ones at Acaconda for about $85?? or should I go bigger and badder??
Cheers

Yeah I'm starting to thinking that. I just did a search of the forums and found lots of posts on inverters. They sound like more trouble than they are worth. I think a 12V DC connection to the cig lighter is the go. Especially if I can get a connection which is adjustable to suit otehr inputs.
Dick Smith or tandy might be my next reasearch location.
cheers

Jaycar have 12v DC converters from about $39 up. I have a cheapie to run my laptop and its fine. It can be set to various voltages and comes with a HUGE selection of adaptor plugs.
The other thing about Jaycar..... the staff there actually KNOW what you are asking about and the best, most cost effective solution.
A good rap for them and no, I don't work there or own it LOL

pure sine wave inverters are perfectly fine for battery charging and laptops
modified sine wave work most of the time but really shouldn't be used on something with a battery in it as the way they work fiddles with voltage to make power appear to have a good form... and that can stuff the battery and the controlling electronics.
square wave should never be used on electronic gear

Dick Smith sell a laptop charger for $98 which I bought to power my 19V laptop. The charger can step up as well as down, and it charges very quickly! It was, relative to an inverter, a little bit expensive but I'm happy and it does the job of keeping music and GPS running.
Also works on an aeroplane but since I am always in pov class I've never found where to plug it in...
