I'll have to keep the P38A..

As the car is pretty much off the road awaiting a new drive plate, I thought I'd do something about the ball joints in the front suspension - the boots were torn and the axle oil seals in the axle housing were leaking. They've been that way for the last few years.

So we pulled the front end own and fitted new upper and lower ball joints and new oil seals in the axle housing.

Hmm, the brake discs looked like they were a tad worn so we did them, too. That meant new brake pads....

I dread seeing the bill from KLR Auto tomorrow! I know their price will be fair so I'm not worried that they'd do the wrong thing by me. I'm the one that decided to do both sides and the brakes. I had originally booked it in for one side only but decided to do both sides as the other was starting to leak and both lower ball joints (one each side) had split boots. I probably didn't need to to the top joints which were OK.

Ah, well. At least the hub bearings and CVs (and the CV boots) felt OK. It's a pity one can't lube the CVs and wheel bearings.

I think I'll have to keep the Rangie after I get the bill.

Still, after seeing this month's Open Road (NRMA Mag for interstaters), it's still cheaper to maintain my P38A than buy a replacement.

Thats called Maintenance, I pays for it self 2 fold at least when things dont break but in your case Ron, your not lucky enough for that

It's not just Landies that are continual money pits in maintenance, the machines at work have more parts changed per hrs of use than any car on the road, specially the earth moving stuff.

I thought it was called stupid?

I still like the car. I'd never be able to buy as nice a car for anywhere near what it costs to maintain.

I rarely go off road so the car's good for what I do and it still looks great.

Pretty much the same thoughts I have with my D2 only difference is my D2 has not yet cost me anywhere near in mantience as your P38 Ron. However I realize my D2 is only 6 years old.

Dont worry Ron, as you say you like the vehicle, and if you actually go and price up a replacement, you'll keep it .

I had a customer with a very sad D1 Tdi recently. He was on the edge of selling it, but wanted to find out how much it would cost to fix a huge list to get it up to roadworthy and in safe, reliable condition for daily use.
I gave him a rough estimate and he said go ahead. During the work I kept finding more horrific results of NO maintenance and since I hadn't seen him for a few years I suspected he had been getting a local to fix/ maintain the old Tdi, as he lives a fair way from us. Not so. He opened the bonnet at christmas time to jump start it as the lamps were left on, but other than that NOTHING was done since I first saw the vehicle over 2 years ago!!! To give you some idea, when I started it I was sure the harmonic balancer had come loose, the rattle from the engine was unbelievable. It turned out to be a combination of the AC compressor bolts MISSING and the compressor was just sliding around on the top of the engine connected only by its pipes, and the complete absence of valve stem caps under the rocker arms, giving it about a 1 mm tappet clearance!!!

Anyway, the end result was in excess of 3K,Including ABS sensor etc and I was a bit worried about his reaction as he kept saying 'just fix it,'
I was pleasantly suprised and alarmed at the same time when he said "Thats good, $1500 a year for maintenance is pretty cheap really"

I added that unless the servicing is performed ON TIME in the future, he may not be so lucky....

    We get that sometimes...

It goes without saying that prevention is better than cure I change oil (Engine ) evry 8 weeks as Im doing roughly 5000kays in that time
And lift the bonnet once a week to give her the once over all oils are changed every 6 months as Im a bit fussy bout that air pressures are checked every week and Ill crawl underneath after every outing in the scrub as you never know what might happen when out playing I dont want to break down (Touch Wood) Mines done 104 550 and still not one oil leak gotta be happy with that

New upper and lower ball joints ...... $1000
New disc rotors and brake pads .......$400
The feeling of driving around in a P38 Pange Rover ....... Priceless

There are some things that money can't buy ..... for owning a P38 - there's Mastercard.

    You've just gotta do it.
