    Know anything about HD tv?

    G'Day,

Ive got a dumb Ass question.

We have a stardard digital top set box at home, and we can get a few extra channels, like sbs 2

But when I was at one of our clients last night I had a play with there big HD tv, and found a few extra channels on top of what we can get.

A few of them where the type that you might see on the tv demo in the shop to show how good the set is etc.......My fav was the Japanesse garden and flying around the alps.....and of course the bondi beach

So are the "Demo" type shows just that and only for HD tv's?

Its just that out digital top box is a hard thing to try and tune in, but we have had it for a few years now, and dont to miss out on any new channels etc, if there are any

Also do you know if Prime (country Vic) tv is at 100% yet, it seems to drop out alot, mainly at night, any ideas please?

In Perth, I basically get the usual Ch 7,9, 10 and SBS all in HD as well as the SD versions - same content though, as far as I could tell when i first got the TV. Haven't noticed any extra channels or demo channels, but haven't re-scanned for a while. The shops usually play a demo loop off of a DVD player or simialr though.

Andrew, I bought my folks a Digital/HD Recorder earlier this year. When I tuned in it I noticed that some of the channels wouldn't display on their standard old TV. This I assume is because they are broadcast at the HD interlace signal rate and their TV is just a plain old CRT type. They can get about 20 channels in Maryborough so you should get similar over in Hamilton. Most are just different pickups of the same thing - think they got 5 signals of Prime - some from Bendigo, some from Ballarat.

What I do recommend is if you get the digital channels and your TV has S-Video then send the picture via that, if its got Component then even better, the picture quality, even on a standard TV, is much better.

As for me, I'll keep dreaming that one day digital TV will be available here. In the mean time I'll stick to DVD's and full surround sound

The other thing that everyone forgets is their antena, cable and fittings. To get optimal picture you should make sure that you use good quality cable eg quad sheild and F type conectors on everything including balun, amps ,splitters etc.

As I understand it your digital set-top box can tune in all the digital channels available but how many that is depends on your signal strength and reception quality. These can be improved by using the correct aerial and quad-shielded coax cabling to the box. Even if you receive every channel at the set top box on a standard TV you can only see the standard definition digital channels not the HD digital channels. The SD digital channels carry the same programs as the normal TV channels but there are not enough programs available in HD digital to fill the HD channels so they broadcast HD demos instead of the usual daytime drivel. They do look great on a big screen (not that I have one).
Drop out is a sign of marginal signal, a better aerial and cable could help.

AFAIK part of the licence requirement to broadcast HDTV is that the station must offer 25% of the programming different to other broadcasts.

So there will be some different material on HDTV stations.
I live at avoca Beach and get my digital signal (SD)from Forresters Beach repeater.(about 10Km away)
I have a new antenna, with all new cabling, signal amplifier, and supposedly one of the best set top boxes. AND I have a component connection between the Set top box and TV (106 CM Hitachi SD.)
When pulling a good signal it is brilliant.

AND some nights I get absolutely **** reception.
Interference on digital is much more intrusive than on old analogue and HDTV is far worse than SD digital.
Digital is also affected by things like tree branches near the antenna, and windy days can really cause poor reception.

IMHO at 106 CM size and smaller, HD is not all that much better. Comparing HD and SD directly on my laptop, I cannot pick any difference at all. However I do notice that you need amuch better signal for HD.

    Hope this helps.
    Regards Philip A
