    New second hand tdi 2001

    Hi Guys,

I am in the process of looking to buy a second hand Discovery. I've had a number of 4bs in the past, including a couple of Pajeros, a Landcruiser middy and lately a pathfinder.

I am looking at a 2001 Discovery Tdi. Is there anything that I should be looking for, as far as mechanic problems etc? It has about 98,000km on it.

Its actually in Orange, and I notice a few of your guys are from around here.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers
    David

Hi David, I think you cannot be looking at a TDi as I understand they were TD5 only from 1999 onwards. Can you confirm either the year or engine type?Cheers, 130man.

    G'day 99pathy

If it is 4 cylinder it is a TDI but if it is 5 cylinder it is a TD5 engine built by BMW, BUT there is a possibity that it is an old stock TDI which would have been a "Runout" model. Others on here would be able to help you.

    cheers

    Tdi's finished in 98 din't they - gotta be a TD5

If the taillights are half way up the back quarter panel its a D2 and a TD5 - if they are down the bottom its a D1 and a TDi.

I’m no expert but I would say by 2001 the run where gone he probably means Turbo diesel injected at that year it would have to be TD5

I'd say he has said TDi because he doesn't know alot about LandRovers, not a bad thing, i can guarentee it's a TD5 if it's a 2001 model, cause that's what i have

Now a TD5 with 98,000 hasn't done alot for it's age, but things to look for are service history, oil in the harness (this is a fault common in TD5s)

Mine has 153,000ks and i've had this problem, now fixed of coarse.

Make sure the service history is well documented, if not stay well clear

Is it an SE5 or SE7, does it have ACE, SLS, Dual air, leather and so on, and what are they asking for it.

Also put where you are in your profile, lets us know, top right hand corner is where it's displayed.

More info is nessesary to make an informed post on weather or not it is a good buy or not.

    1. Is it D1 or D2?, I would think it is D2 being 2001.
    2. How much is it?
    3. What model, SE5/7 etc?
    4. Any accessories?
    5. what sort of condition? and photo's help.

If you arnt mechanically minded, either find someone from here who is that can go look at it with you, or take it to an independant mechanic (Landrover specialist would be prefered) to check the normal bits and pieces and general condition.

Do a search on here (if it is TD5) for information about the injector loom and centre diff mod for manual enguagement.

Thats about all I know about them as I have a D1, there are some very clued in people on here that are happy to give info on any model of LR so make the most of the search function and you should be able to find what you need to know.

If you add some more info then you might get some more replies that are helpful.

We must have been posting at the same time redback lol

Thanks everyone. As you can obviously tell, its early days in my research.

    The truck is a 12/2001 model SE7.

Its very clean and unfortunately hasn't got too may accessories.

I'll go and check it over a bit more.

    Cheers
    David
