This risk has to be considered imho, as it may prove not to be an inexpensive exercise after all. 3 months does not seem long. It could be a month or so before it gets fitted.
With it repaired in SA, at least you can go to the repair bod & have him/her look at it for any diagnosis.

On all their other stuff, the buyer has to stand the return cost. Even when a part is crook straight out of the box they still wanted me to pay for it's return. Gladly, I got that sorted.
Freight each way is $65 dollars +/-$10, I see your point about it being supplied by an SA mob although $1,600 for a re-co from 4WD's and much much more in SA

Anyone got an R380 in good condition that they would like to sell?

Not that I have been down this track, but from what I read, gearboxes seem to be one of those things that you can never be sure about, ie. Best bearings & seals fitted or pot noodle ones? Seems you can never know.
Maybe the SA ones are using all genuine parts?

I suppose all you do is talk the person repairing them & get some sort of reassurances but at the end of the day one has to trust somebody & it's not always easy.

Have you tried Triumph-Rover Spares yet? Kym at Land-Ranger Spares?

spudboy (?) on AULRO, swears by a crowd in the City for all his repairs.

I have only used them for small things such as gaskets, seals etc as I have had problems with components through them.

Hmmm, $1600 is a bit cheap for a reco R380
ESPECIALLY if it was an early edition, with the poor designed 2nd synchro hub etc, which will give troubles later, AFTER warranty expires! The new uprated hub and rings etc are about $500.00 alone. I am suspicious at that price.

You only get what you pay for.
Just my c's worth on the subject.

I think the expertise, quality of parts and value for money is great from British 4wd, and very hard to beat. I order most of my stuff from them, i have the Four Wheel Drives Catalogue but find Alan at British 4wd has been cheaper for anything i have needed. matt

I call Four Wheel Drives Dofor Parts, as in do for now! A long time ago I used to buy parts off them, but I got sick of replacing the same parts every six months! I now just buy all my parts off Fred Smith, and have been doing so for over 10 years now.

Much the same here, although i still buy non-critical parts from Four Wheel Drives, and I also buy parts from All Four x 4 Spares (NSW). But The big plus of Four Wheel Drives is that they are very good on despatching stuff - never had any problems there.

But you can be sure that any parts you get from Fred Smith will be as good as you can get, and not necessarily all that expensive.
