I think the TDi is basically underpowered for the weight of vehicle it is pulling around but no worse than the other diesels fourbies of that vintage eg the 2.8 GQ patrol.
I haven't bothered having the fuel pump tweaks done on but have had a free flow muffler put on which helps with turbo lag.
Only fuelling up every couple of weeks or more helsp overcome the fact they are not a rocket ship.

Not that fussed about the rocket ship part as long as I can overtake things if I need to :), hey, the Paj's 4D56 has no electronics. It's bullet proof, but the rip snorting 62kW and no 6th gear are the real downfall.:mad:
The main concern I had on the auto I drove was that pulling out into traffic was a leisurely experience...:eek:
Did they ever fix the back seat thing. You can lock the seat "up" even on the 19y.o. Mitsi!

Are you referring to the second or third row seats in the Disco? The second row fold forward behind the front seats and into the footwell. Don't know about third row seats as mine is only a five seater. As for performance, give the injector pump a tweak and they go alright. I generally drive sedately, but when I'm in a hurry my Tdi gets up and boogies OK. Remember that Land Rovers have the long travel throttle, so if you're used to a jappo, it may require re-learning....Cheers Chris.
I have a 99 disco, and personally I dont give a hoot what anyone behind me says. Its a great vehicle, hooks into corners like no ones business (4 wheel slides :angel:) and is very economical. Plus, the BIGGEST bonus is, its a Land Rover :D
Red baron - my '94 was a 5seater...as I recall the second row folded forward then "up" behind the front seats...only to fall down again once you took off (if there was nothing to wedge them up...) hopefully not onto pets, nanna'a antique table or whatever was in the back. :o:D:o:D Hence I was wondering if anything on this changed over the model life.
Stooge - it wasn't so much the cruising speed as the pulling out into a line of traffic - press go pedal and wait for something to happen, eventually, that put me off a bit. As a rule I prefer manuals, but on the 2nd hand market other things like condition, extras start to come into play.;)

I bought a td 5 D2 it was hope less in town until I put a DP chip in it. Now its very drive able around town and really goes if you give it the berries.
It is a manual ( I can't get used to autos ).
DPug - yeah, I'm not sure I can get used to the auto either...had a D2 for a loan car when LR were doing my valley cover (for the second time). Took it up a long hill and it was a very peculiar experience...
Hey 2 Rocks I dont own one of those but have driven one once or twice and felt the same as you underpowered and gutless on take off, however someone told me to drive it as if u were stealing it and yes it went very well, meaning dont be scared to put the boot in and you will find it will go. The best thing is you still will get good fuel economy!
Dont wait around go and get the DISCO before some one else does as it sounds like a good one!:cool:

Ok, so I've missed out by minutes and hours on 2 very nice 100 series Cruisers this week (why am I looking at Cruisers? 1. they're big, 2. most people have an inkling of how to work on them, 3. just enough electronics to make them relatively economical, 4. they're big and 5. room for more than just a couple of swags, 6. did I mention they're big?)
But to buy wih the $$ I have, I'll get the car and not much more, maybe a steel bullbar if I'm lucky...
Which brings me back to the '99 D1 for $15k...I could buy a lot of extras for the change (assuming I can live with the auto box), winch, lift kit, lockers, STT's and maybe moving the seat so a 1.95m person can drive it - say $7k worth. Strangely for such a late model it has no airbags - which is a bit of a stumbling block.
Or there's a D2 with bullbar, snorkel, chip, LR tank, OME susp (yuk!), UHF, s/s intercooler for $23k. Sounds good, but the luddite in me says that the first Kimberley river crossing it does will see me pushing it home - too many little black boxes!
Any thoughts on this?
