    Importing cars

Anyone done it? Obviously you'd be parting with a bit of cash to do it but it looks like a mega headache! Anyone know of companies that will do it for you? Thinking it might be cheaper (and easier) to get a fender 90 imported than buying it hear but can't see I'd have the time to be able to do all the fluffing around to import it myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    New or used?

There's quite a few people who have (run a search on importing) but in the main it's been people who were emigrating and bringing their cars along for the ride.

If you want a new one, order it through a dealer. They're special delivery only, but can be got, apparently.

For a late model, look around long enough and they'll come up - mostly in the $30-40k mark. Occasionally the import ones come up a little cheaper.

If you want really cheap - forget it. UK Landies have tougher lives, what with roads being salted all winter. And on top of that there are restrictions about importing vehicles that are second-hand, not owned by you overseas, and not of a "historic" age.

through various e-mails it was found that i could import one but i'd have to pay an astrinomical amount of tax on the vehicle once here and thus making it too expensive.
i'm lucky in the fact that my sister is now applying for a p.r. with the hope of emigrating, if shes successful then i'm going to buy a u.k. 90 through her at least a year before she comes so she can bring it with her for me - i see this as being the most economical way of doing it. hope this helps

we imported our nintey, was fairly simple but required permission before import then a very deep clean and finally lots of taxs to be paid to get it released before going though the blue slip engineering and compliance plate stuff.
i would say go for it but do your sums, 90 in the uk are abused and rot pretty early in life due to wet weather and salty roads.

I looked at bringing my 2004 D2a over with me when I emigrated late last year - wasn't worth it. You pay 10% import duty and 10% GST on the value of the vehicle, plus shipping costs.

Also, you can only bring in vehicles over 15 years old UNLESS you have owned AND been using the vehicle in the country where it resides priot to importation for 12 months as your daily transport - and you need to submit your passport and receipts to prove this. Long gone are the days where you could buy a vehicle overseas, leave it for 12 months and then put it on a boat.

Unless you were abroad for a year, or the vehicle was over 15 years old, AND it was a very special vehicle, it's not worth the hassle IMHO.

Not all the same rules apply for car dealerships, Im not sure of the specifics but if you can get a registered dealership to sponsor the thing or do it in their name and you slip them some $$ It is a lot easier.

I've often wondered if my Dad could 'buy' me a Fender as a 'gift' and send it over..

Same as jik22 above - looked to bring out our 2003 Disco but when all the taxes and other costs were added up it just didn't work out. We'd had it since new and it was a definate low point having to sell it to come out here. But on the bright side it allowed us to buy a Defender once we arrived!!

Check the rules with the Australian Customs and the Federal Dept. of Transport. They are quite helpful people in this regard. Follow the rules, don't get smart and try to put one over them as they do know their stuff, and you will be OK. You MUST get permission to import THAT car before you do anything. So don't buy overseas unless you have permission to import that particular vehicle.

The UK is notoriously expensive to import a vehicle out off, just look at the exchange rate, u could look into South Africa they already rhd over there import regs are easier, my series 3 was privately imported from Africa, cant u find what u want here in Oz? plenty of landys and Rangies about.
