    well,, thats it then,,

    just some random thoughts---

Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Woocoo and 2/3rds of Tiaro.

I dunno,, I've lived here for 5 years and for the life of me I cant think of anything these shires have in common.
    except people.

    So Maryborough has "gained",,
    a lot of wooden bridges,
a lot of upwardly mobile yuppies,
mexicans who have retired and like whales,,,,
    and tourists.

It will open the way for (another 150) "million dollar a year" execs to now consider Local councils (CEO's) as a source of employment.

its also a good time to be in the signwriting business

Report of the Local Government Reform Commission

Here's a link to the report for anybody who is interested.
Works well for us in the short term. We are looking at putting up a shed before christmas. The change moves us out of Beaudesert and into Logan saving us significant $ in council fees for the construction!!
    Long term benefit ... Hmmm???

Amalgamation is ok when they keep all maintenance equipment and jobs.

I work for a Shire in Vic with road / drainage / footpath maintenance, and the equipment we have now, before amalgamation & competitive tendering to maintaining 3x the area is 1/3 of the original equipment???

How can you expect to maintain that area with a third of the equipment.

Lets hope your management is better than ours - it will work with good people in charge.

They will not receive any more $$$ as such, but they will be able to allocate it to different areas to make it better spent money.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Banana Council ended up with half of Taroom shire, which is bollocks as they cant affford to maintain the Cracow region as it is.

Yeah I work for Redcliffe Council and they've definately done a job with a very large brush, not sure they gave it a lot of thought at all.

I've been through a few amalgamations in my time (corporate, not government) and I must say I'm somewhat pessimistic on the outcome. Good management or not, there's a lot of empire building and politics that need to be cleared before any of the plebs can get to work properly.

In the meantime the plebs are usually majorly stressed out with not knowing exactly what to do.

Not to mention the small guy tends to get absorbed into the bigger with little or no say on how things are run - even if the small guy was running them better than the big guy!

    Ah well, such is life.

As a disclaimer I must add that these are my opinions and do not reflect the opinions of my employer in any way.

I heard the Jondaryn mayor on the radio saying this morning that OK you've reviewed us and amalgamated the councils into super councils, now how about a review of the state government. Hand back health and education to the feds and maybe we don't need state at all with these new larger councils.
