    Preparing a D3 for touring?

Just wondered who's done it, what you bought, where from and how much?

    With the cheap bits...

The plan isn't to replace the old Defender for off-road stuff, really just add the basics so it could do some mild off road as well as tarmac and dirt track touring. Was thinking bar, wheels carrier, AT tyres, dual batt, that kind of stuff.

Be aware that it is very easy to overload a D3 when you start fitting accessories. This can have an implication when it comes to warranty, insurance, etc.

The axle loadings are easy to exceed once you have, for example, fitted a steel ARB bullbar, winch, driving lights, roofrack with tent, rear step/wheel carrier, long range tank, etc.

just had a quick look at the spec for the TDV6 and it looks like they have a payload of around 800kg...not sure if this includes passengers, probably does

unfortunity when doing extended touring and not towing a trailer its quite easy to exceed your payload

my mate has a 100 series and its well and truely overloaded before he even hops in, its set up for touring and has about the same load capicity as a TDV6, he has the following fitted, bullbar, side bar and steps, hydraulic winch, steel roof rack, two awning, solar panel, dual wheel carrier, black widow draw system, 60L custom built fridge, 50L water tank, long range fuel 280L total

my defender probably exceeded it payload when i did my simpson trip, i think us defender drivers get an extra 100kg payload, i have a bullbar, sidesteps/bar, extra heavy duty steel roof rack, solar panel, two spare wheels, long range fuel tank 125L, 72L water tank, draw/fridge slide system, two fridges, extra jerry of water, 2 x extra jerry of diesel and than throw in all your camping gear, tools, food and beer.....probably explains why we all upgrade our suspension and fit polyairs.

Which is sound thinking, but won't get you past the legalities unless you have your vehicle engineered with a new GVM. It is possible to do this, but it will be quite involved (read as possibly expensive).
