    Tree Lopping

Is anyone on the forum a tree lopper based in Sydney's west?

I need a tree taken down so I can put up a shed.

It's tall - at least 10 -15 metres but not big in diameter. I don't own a chain saw and I don't want to drop the branches on my neighbours/my fence.

I don't want to buy a chain saw as I don't like them. They frighten me.

I had a quote and after picking myself up off the floor I thought there must be cheaper ways.

I've been thinking of buying a safety harness and climbing the tree to start lopping with a bushsaw.

The trouble is I've never been good at climbing trees, even as a kid.

Depending on what is around it, if there is plenty of room to fell it away from fences/buildings etc a rope as high as you can get it running down to the ground roughly the length of the tree (this is why you need room!) then a star picket (or dropper, whatever it is you guys call them over there! LOL) in to the ground and a mild tension on that so she falls where you want. (Better still two ropes around 45 degrees apart will also make the landing more acurate)

If there are fences/buildings/power lines etc you can't avoid then I'd pay someone, could save you a lot!

Buying a safety harness etc. will make you just as poor. By the time you ge the leg irons, safety harness, ropes and cleats you will say goodbye to about $2000. There is sometimes stuff on ebay, but good quality gear still commands a good price.

The cheapest option I've done is to get the pro tree looper in to drop large sections onto the ground for you, and then chop it up/dispose of it yourself. I got a HUGE poplar dropped earlier this year for $120 cash money. He was in, up and down in about half an hour. Took me 2 days to chop up and clean up the mess afterwards.

Just make sure length of winch cable is greater than length of tree! (And please have camera rolling just in case!) LOL

Depending on the type of tree you may be able to get the large sections felled then stick a notice up out the front or at the shops for free firewood, (all they need to do is cut it to transport!)

Isn't there someone on here looking for free firewood after a not so good run collecting some....... LOL

Probably a bit far away...... then again might be quicker!

Ron I think you should pay someone to do this. Do you know if the character "Kenny" was based around your person in any way?

    Hi Ron,

Check for a tree preservation order. Your council website should make it obvious.

Tree loppers aren't supposed to do the job without seeing your permit from the council.

Go it alone, someone will dob you into the council anyway.

We had a liquidamber cut down - while the permit was being processed, and we still got dobbed in.

    Regards

I live out in Camden and currently going through the same, except I've got a chainsaw and like to use it! - here the council needs a DA to be submitted and then they come out to inspect and compare against the satellite photos (yep that police state again). Council wants $100 for the DA (a friend of mine just paid $1200 to have three removed…..and for every 2 trees taken down you need to plant one).....and the $100.00 is not refunded is they reject the DA.
