Buying a RR TD6 - what do I look out for?

    Hi all,
Just wondering if there is anything to look out for when buying a Rangie TD6? I will be looking for something around the 2003 model.

Also, if anyone has one, how have you found it?

Do you think it is tuff enough for outback touring in the hard stuff?

    thanks

I've got an 03 HSE with the TD6 engine. Absolutely superb, and becoming quite good value price wise now!

The transmission is silky smooth. Engine has heaps of grunt (compared to my TDi300 anyway) and is unbelieveably economical at 11L/100 around town or 9L/100 on the highway.

It has only done beach work and a snow trip so far, but no problems with either. I've been keeping it out of the mud around the farm because it's nice to have one clean car in the family.

It is still under LR warranty until 2008 so try and find one that was purchased with the extended 5 year warranty. I have had a few problems with the digital dash display with pixels going dead (they are from BMW) and I had new door handles put on at no charge because the paint flaked and went chalky. All under warranty.

Highly recommended - no down sides whatsoever (for a big 4x4 anyway).

Outback touring.... I'm not sure... LOTS of electical gear to break/drown.....

    Cheers
    David

Take a look here for general L322 info:

Have a look here for problems encountered:

The main problem with early models is the front differential. There are numerous posts on this issue in both US and UK forums. You can pull the prop shaft off and see if the wear is evident and LR will fix it under warranty.

    Sounds good, thanks for that.

Maybe I can make it the first Rangie across the Madigan Line next year.

As Spuddy says, the front differential is the main concern.
There's been no major issues with the Td6 that I know of.

There have been a few auto transmissions replaced so it may pay to make sure the oil is OK. Dark/burnt oil is a sign that all is not well, even though it might drive fine.
I believe that oil changes are not part of the service schedule (filled for life!!) so that might be something to think about changing.

Radiators leak quite often too & there have also been a few blockages which affect both the engine & transmission cooling efficiency.

Some of the interior trim finishes wear easily but I'm sure you can live with that.

Maybe I can make it the first Rangie across the Madigan Line next year.
I doubt you'd be the first - there's quite a few accomplished trekkers around in the LM Range Rover.
