During a breeze shooting with a mate over a few coldies we were discussing the little 2.25 in the series 3, the idea of fitting a small turbo with a torquey cam was bandied about, I deemed the idea was possibly worth considering but then I had to think why and to what end, So I considered the style and type of driving I was going to do, I considered climbing up and down hills towing a trailer with a dinghy and a fair load off fuel and water etc plus the overall wieght of the 109 itself, I want to do the Birdsville track and the Simpson so do I gain any advantage by fitting asmall jap turbo? Currently my scheduled mods stretch only too a Holden carby, and a 2 in free flow exhaust, we already have electronic ignition. What say the experts?![]()
no no no, leave the missus at home and take the dinghy and the dog instead
If ya guna fit anything and want reliability go find a 4bd1 and lt95 and fit them to it and some s3stage 1 diffs![]()
That can be a major operation though. Also, the Birdsville Tk is pretty good, and not one that I'd be too worried about power on.

I'd suggest it's time to start reading British Landrover magazines. Our British cousins have developed an upgrade for the 2.25 - a better cam, head work, electronic dizzy and (I think) some pipe work. You'll find it advertised every so often in the three major mags: LR world, LROI and LR Monthly. It should be easy to get just the cam posted to Australia- then custom pipework and some head flowing should be easy. Adding a turbo might be a little problematic with unleaded fuel, finding an intercooler and a turbo manifold to suit - then fitting the lot into the small engine bay of the series.
my 3 is a stage one, shes got the good diffs, shes an 82 model, she has the later motor with extra bearings on crank, never had a 2.25 in bits but they seem agricultural enuff for the bear to tackle.
Just do it. You know you want to.![]()

The 2.25 came with a Turbo option in the later 5 main bearing motor. You could try fitting one to a 3 main bearing, I can't say how it would go. Your best option would be to get a turbo manifold from a 5 main bearing 2.5, probably out of the UK. Try getting a copy of LRO International and scour the pages for adverts of wreckers or engine modifiers that may have them. Make sure you get the JULY isuue and read about my trip EAST-WEST across the Simpson in a 2.25 Petrol SIII.

if u look under my bonnet its got room galore, the radiator panels been pushed forward ala defender style, runs a huge merc v8 radiator and has a monster oil cooler and theres still plenty room, I like the idea of extractors and a well jetted holden carby with a mild cam, could probably dismiss the turbo idea, though finding room wouldnt be a prob I think, will hash it some more
