considering the overheating incident you had i'd be replacing all hoses, changing coolant and getting the head checked. Just for your own piece of mind. Unfortunately I don't expect it to be cheap. No idea on cost and labour though.

It is in at the mechanics, the head is fine they said it would have been done last week, but the apprentice opened the box for the hose with a knife and cut it. had to reorder the hose they quoted about $450-$500 for the rest. is this resonable?

About $450-$500 for the rest, do you mean just for the hoses and replacing/flushing/bleeding the coolant? If so that definitely seems a bit steep.

Fitting and fault finding the ECU, that might be the costing on the cake, now I'm not a mechanic but I wouldn't expect to pay more than $250 MAX for hoses and bleeding alone. I can have a look in my price book tomorrow if you tell me what hoses (give you an idea of the cost of hoses alone) if you'd like. Bleeding is easy and takes no time at all.

The only "radiator" cap is on the overflow reservoir.
The fault clearing of the ECU is a 2 minute job, fault tracing though can take as long as it takes. $55 is probably their minimum labour charge.
You didn't mention the cost of coolant but given you can get a 20L drum of pre-mix O.A.T. coolant for no more than $95 then there's a max cost for that.

Your getting ripped they're probably charging you for the second lot of hoses
