    The passing of Jack Hurley

Hi folks, most would probably not know the name Jack Hurley but I’m sure many would be familiar with the company he and his friend Alan Brown started up back in the 1940s and anybody who has had anything to do with trucks would know their company, Brown & Hurley.

Jack Hurley also has another special connection with an up and coming trip. The GCLRO Club Social trip is going up into the Border Range, over the Lions Road. Jack was the driving force for the construction of the tourist road and I have to thank him for many hours of enjoying this area because of the road he inspired.

I spoke to Jack by phone about 6 years ago, while I was Videoing the railway through the Border Range and I will always regret not taking him up on his offer to meet and chat.

Here’s a link to the ABC, to a bit of info about Jack Hurley.

BTW. owing to the now large number of vehicles coming next Sunday ( great to see ) I will be making a slight change in that I will be collecting a fee when we meet at Beaudesert.

The original idea was for everybody to make a donation to the Lions Road up keep as we go passed the Tick Gates. Because of the large number of vehicles coming along on the trip, it would take forever for each vehicle to stop and place their donation in the box and move off again, so I’ll collect a gold coin off each vehicle and give it to Tail End Charlie ( harry ) to put in the box, all in one go.

    Cheers.

Jack had a principle that all motor dealer principals should have tattoed in reverse on their foreheads "The Sales Dept. makes the first sale. The Service and Parts Depts. make the subsequent sales".

Jack Hurley was from Kyogle (where my wife and her enormous family hail from) and was instrumental in building the Lyons Road, which is a fantastic rollercoaster of a road, from north of Wiangaree to somewhere south of Rathdowney.
In 1946 Brown and Hurley (the big truck people) commenced ops, and are responsible for the Kenworth brand in this neck of the woods.

He was quite an amazing larger than life character, who passed away about a week ago, aged about 96...

His son Doug is the Coffs Harbour B+H man, who
so sadly lost his young wife a while back, to a brain tumour...
