Harsh reality may indicate that our unquenchable thirst for oil is the real problem. Sure, religion plays its despicable part, but the sad fact is that without oil the middle east would be a really nice tourist destination (mainly thanks to the work done their in the name of religion over the centuries).
The combination of oil and the money it creates for those who exploit it will eventually be the end of us - sooner or later.
Anyway! enough doom and gloom - check this out...

I was wandering through Myer and discovered the the book "The God Delusion is at No. 3 on their bestseller list. Apparently Richard Dawkins agrees with every second person here that Religion is the big problem.
I wonder how many of the Top 5 Nasty Places to live of the last, say, 100 years have been religious and how many athiestic?
Nazi Germany?
Stalinist Russia?
Cambodia/Kampuchia under Pol Pot?
China during the Cultural Revolution?
The only clear example I can think of of a really nasty religious government is the Taliban, and even they don't come lose to the first three I mention above.
Everybody believes something.

I posted this a while ago, but here's rodney carrington's idea for world peace.

The original is also on there, just do a quick search.
"natural selection" thats the words I was looking for.
My theroy on war is to get all the waring partys over to my place, crack out the home brew and the 'super tube' (as seen on TV's Binge drinking recurits) and the last bloke standing at the end of the night wins the war! Simple, effective, not much blood loss, and everyone wakes up the next day knowing how much of a stupid the idea it was.
My 2cents, Easo
This may sound harsh but one of the reasons I don't give to the various charities seeking funds to save the children (or whatever) is they will only grow up to breed even more starving mouths.
Let natural selection take its course. Drought and famine have a place in the world in keeping burgeoning overpopulation down. The do-gooders don't seem to see that.

Yep, damn do gooders, trying to make sure eveyone at least gets a shot at living an equal life..so lets them die then so we can keep living our life in relative luxury rather than chucking away a few spare gold coins at them, i mean they are going to die anyway right?.
anyone keen to volunteer any of their own kids to die in order to give these kids a shot at a life? or shall we just condemn the starving and poor to 'natural selection'?
Just like the world at large. We are about to start fighting about whether, and how, to feed the starving.
Well, lads, thanks for having a go at the big questions. We might not have solved this particular glitch in the world's ECU, but at least we can rest in the confidence that the professionals haven't solved it either.
That does get me thinking... I wonder, did George Lucas design the world, and British Leyland build it? That might be part of the problem?
