    Sigh...

I own an ex-army Land Rover. It does the job that, a few years ago, a Honda CB250T did - get me to and from work sedately

OK, so I can also take things to the tip in it (but I could always buy a trailer) and I can take it off-road (and I do) but essentially, it's a commuter.

It's matt Olive Drab, but frankly, it's bling, from the tool holders (what an accurate name ) to the convertible roof. I drive it coz I feel good in it.

If something else floats your boat, go for it.

Heck, a bling Land Rover would be a great second-hand buy - guaranteed no off-road and kept spotless

So what I gather from the each to their own crowd is that legalities and safety doesnt count if the owner thinks it looks good.

Try explaining that one to the coroner when a wheel falls off and they kill another innocent road user.

Scrambler, Im not saying that anything on your LR is illegal, Im still talking about 20" bolt on bling

Well, assuming they have it properly engineered, same as any modification outside the automatically approved limits

Mate, many things on my LR are illegal, but they are all exactly as it was delivered. The fact the dash lights can be on when the exterior lights are off. The convoy lighting switch that kills the horn and indicators. The 11 seats when the car is complianced for 3. Need I go on? I keep mine original - that's my little vanity. Some of the originality was never street legal - go figure.

I agree re safety, but unless you KNOW the car hasn't been engineer approved, it's at least possible. If it's safety, there is no arguement. If it's the deviation from the common view here that a Land Rover (or even a Land Cruiser) is an off-road vehicle, well that is debatable.

Legalities and safety clearly do matter. I am sure there are 4wds out there with big shiny rims that are legal. You can't condemn a look just because you think it might be illegal. First off, go and find one of these modified vehicles, then talk to the owner and find out if it is legal. If not, contact the appropriate authorities.

Then tell us all about how it went, include pics

I'll tell you what John, you find me 2 sets of 20" rims that are road legal for a Plado taking in account maximum load rating and then find tyres to suit.

Back when I was working as a tyre fitter, it wasnt easy BUT im sure that some manufacturers would have made something by now.

And Ray, how are you going with ROH and your cracked rims, I find that funny as well what do they say about those in glass houses.

There is no use talking to the owners, I doubt they would know or care.
