Thread: Paranoia sets in - wheel carriers. HF aerials, & fridges

Not paranoid as it all adds up if taken. However, I do not worry and am too lazy to remove things each time, but one point I would like to make on the locking nuts, is consider this before fitting or removing.

I had the LR locking nuts on my D2 which meant the use of the special tool thingy....now i'm sure the designers of this particular locking nut system were very pleased with themselves when they concieved it...but my advice is remove them if you off road in remote areas. It is far too easy to round off the nut using this tool rendering it completely useless unless you have a full gammit of other appropriate tools.......and when it is essential that you change your flat when out in the middle of nowhere, you will see the flaws in this design.

Do many people engrave their tools and other stuff with their licence no. (and State)? I do - but my licence no. is 4 digits and 2 letters. I engrave along the lines of NSW nnnnAA

My lot do. Our (ancient) Epson LQ1070 printer has a whopping 4510MB

However, I'll be darned if I can remember what my licence no. is, it's eight digits long , but it can be split into 2 'years' (ie. 1nnn 1nnn), but nothing notable happened in either of those years!

Someone around a campfire was telling me the story of a trip he was participating in. The convoy of 6 or seven cars stopped for dinner at a pub. When they came out, all the driving lights, and CB antennas from all the cars had gone.

This group now post a "sentry" with the cars whenever they go for a drink or meal. Now, that may be a bit over the top, but I don't think Ron's paranoid - there are plenty of low lifes out there. .

I know there's insurance, but that sort of thing can greatly inconvenience /spoil a trip.

When I was in the Sydney Toymota LC Club, I seem to recall them posting a sentry or two outside. There'd be a line of Cruisers outside that must have had a total value of a million dollars or more - and that was over 10 years ago!

My old FJ55 looked poor beside them all.

If you do remove your rear bar, tyre, fridge etc then think of the weight your car doesn't have to lug around town.

I wouldn't mind lock nuts for my wheels but I figure I will lose the key when I need it most. It happened to my brother and we used vice grips to unwind the lock nuts. They were obviously not recessed in the wheel.

I don't have a rear bar just the factory rear door mounted spare for me.

I leave my fridge at home when I'm not using it. The 80L Waeco eats up 99% of my cargo space otherwise.

No spotlights on mine. The upgraded wiring for the headlights made my spotlights obsolete. They were only small so I took them off for increased airflow to the radiator.

My wheels (on the car) don't have lock nuts either. It wasn't a problem before the D2 came out. The wheels didn't fit anything else and there weren't many P38A.

But now with all the thieving D2 owners out there, I might need 'em.......

Re the UHF, I'm more worried about a low-life just breaking it off.

I don't have spotties fitted as yet but I've got a nice set of Hella FF1000 looking for a home.
