I'd keep your Disco and do the 300 TDI ... Very simple... Like most here say there are many other options (though we don't have the Nissans here) but none of them are a Land Rover... I've had plenty of 4X4's and find I've had the most fun in my Rovers.. I'm also a Mechanic and an Engineer and aside from the occasional "WTF where they thinking?" they are easy to work on and a great vehicle to learn about working on your own stuff! Plus they perform.. After I got my first coiler I was amazed!
In the end you said it!
    You love your Land Rover..

and transfer anything useful off yours. Sell what's left - and it will sell, particularly if you strip it and sell it as spares.

I've seen some in the markets here that would have borne investigation.

Hmm, look here - a 200Tdi that could become a donor to yours and then be saleable as spares: http://www.aulro.com/apc/showproduct...uct=1115&cat=9

    second motor with only 100,000kms
This Disco has half the mods you want already done: http://www.aulro.com/apc/showproduct...duct=975&cat=9

Or Hymie (on this forum) has a GQ for sale http://www.aulro.com/apc/showproduct...uct=1039&cat=9

thanks though thats a begining to arguments against....it'll take a lot of parts to make up the 4 or 5 grand difference though
The later model Missans with the 3L are time bombs, mate of mine just had to replace his Clutch, trouble is you have to replace the flywheel as well cost $3K for the flywheel alone, my mates Missan is not a patch on my 93 Disco, I'm forever waiting for him to catch up or having to pull him out of trouble. My 93 Disco was bought for $8K, it came with, 2" lift, late model 4Lt (cross-bolted) engine with the 93 3.5 ignition and EFI (for simplicity), ARB lockers front and rear, 4:11 CWP's,Maxi-drive axles and flanges, 110 CV joints, cut and flared guards to accomodate 35's, ARB front winch bar and rear step and rock sliders, AMV front bash plate and diff guards, 135L fuel tank, shelves and sliding drawer in the back, Cargo barrier, Paratus driver seat. I fitted Bilsteins, and 33" tyres and my version of Safari Snorkel, and a Winch, goes like a blur, reasonable on fuel considering the Power. My point is you can find bargains like this, if you look, this truck had $16K spent on it, got it for 8k. You can build one up and have your ultimate off-road machine or you can buy one like I did and sell what you have now, but for god's sake don't buy a Missan, Regards Frank.

Bloody hard call as I understand your frustrations.

I am going to buy a GQ ute for my other half, we need it for the block, and it has to be reliable, and while I am a landy nut I think nissans are as tough as nails reliable and a capable 4wd to boot.

As a four wheel drive my diso runs rings around everything but the dedicated off road racers, but bloody nora has it cost me big dollars to get it there and I need to replace more very soon. As my automatic specialist keeps telling me - Blythe buy a quad bike and kill that, please look after your car I am sick of taking money off of you (but he still does)

My real quandry is I doubt that a japanese 4wd will last any better than the diso, but if you look at the really hotted up super modified rigs almost all of them run nissan gear so there has to be something good in them.

thanks for all the advice guys. i think i'm going to look at the options available to me to repower the disco and stay rover there is a chance that the current engine might be salvageable in part or full so obviously i'll look at that first if however it would be less hassle to whip it out and replace thats what i'll do. i've got a much better ideas of whats possible after reading this thread so once again thanks hopefuly i'lbe rovering for a long time to come as i would have missed the truck if i'd got rid

    just to stir the pot...

Nissan running gear is as tough as nails, think of it as the ford 9 inch of running gear for four wheel drives. Their engines aint special but the ones that are also have special price tags when it comes to repairs. If the could sort their bloddy chassis and steering gear out Id almost be interested in one...

IMHO worst thing about them is they never just break a littel bit they do it in grand style unlike a rover which will let you know its going crook and usually let you limp it a little bit to get you out of trouble.

I've never personally had a rover go so west so bad It couldnt get me to the next town.

well the 200TDi is officially defuct (deliberate typo Wink )
I had the choice of another 200 tdi or a low K 300tdi to replace it with and despite the extra faffing and possibly a slightly less reliable engine i've opted for the 300 in a nod toward being able to get parts in the future at a reasonable price i'll be having the pump tweeked a bit to increase power and am chucking the LRA body lift in at the same time. this however depletes my funds entirely so my hope to lock the disco F and R and change the CWP to 4.11's will have to go on long term standby
out of interest has anyone driven 33's on standard gear ratios? is it a complete PITA??

A nissan or a bitsamissing is not a 4wds bumhole, fix your Landy and be happy
