If one wants promotion, you have to know the three items above, particularly EAPS. You cannot say it's all crap!

At one interview a colleague was asked about working with intellectually impaired people in our workplace. He said (a) we don't have them so the issue doesn't arise and (b) we work in a single-person workplace. He lost points because of that and didn't get the job.

Can you imagine having an intellectually impaired person controlling the safe running of trains. Flamin' heck!

An electrician at the hospital where my wife works told her he was not asked about his electrical knowledge or experience when he went for the job. They focussed on those 3 things.

Ahh, the NSW (Labor) Govt. - so the political party makes no difference.

Fortunately for me, I've been promoted as far as I want to go so I don't apply for jobs.

    Ron how true,
a good mate of mine applied for a senior trainers position back where I used to work, he is the only one in the state, that is still there, that has all the qualifications required, guess what he didn't get the job, another twit who i know and wouldn;t feed got the nomination. Why I guess he answered the eeo, eap and ohs questions better. Nothing about technical expertise.

    great this governmetn system.

IU could go up and still stay at the coal face but that would mean working where Dobbo works.

His location (not Dobbo) is well known as having quite a few blokes who bully learners (we have to train for each at which we work) and for deliberately setting them up so that they screw up and delay trains or wrong route them (great in peak hour). One then gets a please explain - do it a few times and you'll be taken off the job.

We get a fixed number of days to learn a control panel so they won't let the learner on to the panel to learn it. If you don't know it after those days even though you haven't worked it, bad luck.

They get enormous amount of overtime as they are down in staff numbers so they don't want more people coming in to fill the vacancies. I get no overtime as we have excess staff - people won't go to Dobbo's location.

Yep, I've seen it a few times. And they've come unstuck when it has hit the fan.

Yes but they won't come unstuck, thats how the system is now orientated.

A couple of years ago they upgraded the chief/senior trainers position to incorporate some technical competencies which at the time only 5 people in the state had.
Now there is one and he didn't get the job, figure that out.

    You can't.

Some years ago (in OTC), I was acting in a higher grade and had been for about a year before it was advertised.

I applied but lost to another bloke who had no experience in my field.

I was then asked to train him!

I appealed the promotion. The reps on the appeals board were the union rep (who didn't like me as I was a very non-unionist union member), the company rep, and the independent.

After the appeal which I lost, the company rep (in private) told me that he'd voted for me, the union rep against me, and those situations, the independent always went the way of the original promotion.

I think that this thread has pointed out one of the basic flaws in the way most workplaces are organised.

This is that the only avenue for promotion is to go into some sort of supervisory role, such as management. Organisations in general offer these promotions to the people who perform best in their field.

The result is that you have done two things - you have removed from their field your best performer (certainly a loss to the organisation), and you have moved him/her into a field that he may or may not perform well in.

I don't know what the answer is. The only thing that keeps the country working is that at least some of the people promoted are at least reasonably competent at management, and that some of the best people at skilled tasks like what they are doing enough to refuse promotion.
