Visit which gov department looks after mining in the ACT and visit their library and look at their old reports. Some will be of individual mines and may contain maps. Sometimes there are geological maps available which will show the location of mines, new and old. If you are interested in using your detector for items other than gold then a search around the mines and building ruins may.... may .. find other items such as coins, buttons etc.
I must admit I have never tried searching for nuggets on a beach before. Might have to go to Nobby's this weekend.

One of my parents neighbours has been doing it for years, waht NM's said, has been hiting the beaches etc for years, plus everything inland that is accessable, he told me once that most sites had been flogged to within an inch of their lives, by prospoectors with detectors, as was said earlier there are very few pristine sites left these days.
There is an old pub site that i know of where a bushranger dropped a bag of gold coin he had stolen into a long drop for safe keeping . He never came back that would be a find, but it to has been picked over for years. Thats if anyone can work out where the long drop was.
You want to know where, near sandy camp via carinda.

My bit of land had a cheapo metal detector over it for a couple of days in the early eighties.
It is very hilly and remote.
From my research, I reckon it would be a great spot to go over with one of the newer minelab detectors, since it is right in the middle of the goldfields.;)
Just the $5k and the time. Now I've finished uni I'm close to having the time. I'm selling my shed up in the mountains soon, so maybe then I'll have the money, too.
