I'm looking for a capable 4wd. Seriously all brand bias aside as this is a land rover site I'm sure there is a little bias. Looking for the camping vehicle not a rock crawler but still capable off the road. I need to sit 4 maybe more 6 would be nice. From the choices below only the RR seats 6, I have a budget of $4000 cash plus whatever I can get for my jeep.
Ok between the following
1997 Jeep Cherokee stock (I already own this one) but could add $3000 in upgrades
1976 Land Rover Series III LWB(can own next Friday)
Holden motor, free wheel, new shocks/springs in rear. Runs good and is from a friend so reasonably sure it is not a lemon. $2900 Only 3 seater though and would need to add seats. I did get a rear seat out of a ford falcon that would fit nice with belts and mounts included
1986 Toyota Bundera Diesel. No rust. 300K but has had a motor and gear box rebuild about 100K ago $6000 Manual
1983 Range Rover 4speed manual petrol V8 98000 ks in pretty good nick. for about $4000
Just how good are the Series LR off road. I know that is what they were designed for but compared to a toyota or Range Rover just how good are they?
Chris
only 2 really in the running would be the jeep or the range rover IMHO.
the series is very capable but rough as bags and slow compared to the two prime contenders...
the range rover is the more capable offroad but is an unknown compared to the jeep.
you know the jeep, can you justify throwing more money at it ?
do you know much about rovers ?
rovers and jeep are on a par upkeep wise from what i have seen and heard.
can be fun picking a winner...
best of luck with it...

to be honest .........
you wouldn't catch me driving a Series III LWB around as a camping truck
way to slow for me![]()
130's rule
well they aint rock crawlers they wont win you any speed competitions but they will get you there. more importantly they are simple and aside from a few specialist bearings in the gearbox and tcase every other part is available for replacement or repair.
A good driver in a series will get it places that an average driver will get a perentine or pre traction control deefer or disco. (and occasionally further)
Id put the jeep on a bout par with a stock disco (sereis 1) in offroad capabilites but not so high on the reliability or repairability scale, However the jeep does have more creature comforts.
The series will show up a toymotoa of the same vintage in offroad abilites but not in terms of total power or speed but in stock trim also get better fuel economy if driven nicely.
The rangie is the big bro of the disco IF a disco (series 1) can do it the rangie will do it and do it easier. (as a general rule)
For that money you might also be able to get yourself into a stockish V8 disco(sereis 1)

Only new to LR my self I dont count the free lander I owned but Ive owned a Jeep Cherokee all for about 3 months then it had to go which the Discovery 2 replaced the one I had was the limited with all the bells and whistles leather and all. neat as can be with 80000km on the clock owned by old farts who bought it new and the cleanest 98 model I had seen
In 3 months the selector for the transfer case went twice and an electrical problem meant that the tail lights stayed on even when the car was switched off which meant for 2weeks I Disconnected the battery every night till it got ****ed off
However if yours is trouble free keep it and spend the bucks on that
My horror story would say get rid of it and add your cash and by something else perhaps a RR but IMO not a series for a long traveller again IMO I think there more to be admired then driven these days
I'd go a S1 Discovery, more space than a Jeep, great all rounder although if fuel economy is a consideration the probably lean to the diesels.
Lots of comfort, capable in stock form, easy to get all the major accessories for and good on the highway (diesel's maybe not so in the vintage you'd be looking if you want to tow large van's etc)
Go for a 110 Fender
