It does sound unfair, but thems the regulations which say you don't have to pay rego, insurance or get a licence to ride a bike, but you do have to ride the bike on the road unless under 12.

Actually you can still get done for speeding and it has made the paper here and in Melbourne recently with cyclists fined for speeding in shared zones. You knock down the old lady and she sues your ****, I don't know of any of my cyclist friends that don't also have cars and pay rego same as everyone else around. And as pointed out earlier your rego doesn't pay for roads. Even though your doing all the other motorists a favor and taking one more car out of that mornings traffic jam.
Hmm, not so sure. In NSW, you'll definitely get grabbed for riding up the breakdown lane.
However, if you stay to the left of the lane marking whilst passing a car on his right, then you won't get hit for passing on the left.
Both my son and I have had cops move over so we could lane split. They don't worry about it if you're moving through slow or stationary traffic.
I can find no reference to it in the Austrralian Road Rules.

Whether it's illegal or not, and I can't find any reference to it either, it doesn't justify assaulting someone because you find it irritating. If you saw someone speeding would you chuck a rock through their windscreen and then laugh if they crashed?
Mate of mine was knocked off his motorbike and seriously injured by some moron in a car who opened the (passenger) door deliberately into him.
i ride a pushie around home and to work. It always reminds me of the first rule of the road....
Always assume the buggers aer out to get you!
(funnily enough they are even like that when i drive the Defender :()
Riding bikes is probably one of my more favourite past times.
I've acquired quite a few self inflicted, and quite a few other injuries besides. I've run into several 'cunningly' accidentally opened doors. For the most part, it's not -too- bad. Then again, I ride a tank. I do -hate- the fact that I must then spend another $100 on a rim and tube most likely afterwards. Not to mention the cracked frame I acquired from one such incident.
But that's not even the best part. The best part is getting clipped in traffic, when people dont think you're allowed a lane. Most've been slow speed. After the first 'brush' I acquired metal bar ends (just stops, not the big long pointy ones). These serve their intended purpose. Any bastard that comes too close gets to trade some paint...and possibly a boot print if I get the time.
What aggrivates me most, idiots that dont wear helmets! Much gnashing of teeth when I see li'l kids riding around without them on. I want to beat the parents in the head as punishment. But maybe I just like beating people though.
Geez.........not just my view I'm sure, but maybe it's an age thing, why don't we all just learn to live with each other and share. Tolerance is the key word, take time out to smell the roses.
I don't usually get involved in these posts, but it got to me this time.:(
Unless its legal to do it in a car, it's basically not legal to do it on a bike with a few exceptions.
So bicycles can 'generally' lane split, ride in the breakdown lane, ride two abreast, or stop on a path, dividing strip or nature strip.Quote:

As far as I'm aware, it is not illegal to lane-split. I hate drivers who close the gap.
