Thread: Stupid things we did as kids

Used to go out with a mate, pull stockings over our heads and jump out at cars from behind trees and under bridges.

It still makes me gag to think about the day we used his mums stockings, and the burning lips we got from the saltiness. The moron pulled them from the dirty laundry basket.

Climbing all over the Story Bridge in Brisbane with school mates aged about 11-12.

Diving into the flooded quarry at Morningside from a cliff holding large rocks so you would sink deep.

Searching bushland at Toohey Forest and Inala for WWII ammunition and pulling the projectiles out to get the charge to make blasting charges to make a cave in a cliff for a clubhouse.

Throwing some of said ammunition into fires for fun.

Pulling lead head nails out of corrugated iron buildings to sell to the scrap dealer for pocket money. Charles Hope factory in Fortitude Valley was a favourite as the building was built right on the footpath and one could quickly get a billy can full of nails before you were noticed and chased, and the scrap dealer was about 100 yards down the street.

I never got much for the lead out of the butts at dads pistol range, 20lt bucket full, got 15 bucks. Same for the brass, 20lt bucket of mostly .22 brass and lass than 20bucks for it.

Easo

One of the worst was getting roman candles. We would wear safety goggles stand back to back take 20 paces light them turn and fire.
Built a bomb from 20 thunders. Lighting thunders in the car and dropping them out the hole in the floor. My younger brother dropped one and it went off in the car.
We used to build rubber band guns using those monster hospital bands which are adjustable.

Then there was all the stupid things in the cars. Hope my boys aren't as stupid.

When we were littlies dad used to take us to the old Spitfire airstrips out of Darwin, we used to dig in the old butts they used for synching the guns, still gots heap of 20 mm projectiles at home we dug out, make good paper wieghts. We used to kick 50 cal shells around the place everywhere there and there were many lives ones lying about, dangerous place then, probably all houses now.

As a kid lived on the army barracks at Canungra. Favourite past time was sneaking onto the exercise areas (stands) and nicking blank rounds that were not fired (normally jammed) and any other ordanance we could find. Then would cut all the tops off and make a huge line of gunpowder just like the cowboys robbing banks.

We kept the firey's busy on alot of occasions and got to know the camp commandant and his office fairly intimately.

Yeah dad loved us for it.

Probably the most dangerous antic we used to get up to on the farm was making bolt bombs. Get two approx 3/4" bolts and a nut. Fill the nut with match heads and screw the bolts in on the match heads from each side. Then throw the assembly down hard on concrete. The result was the threads would strip and it would blow apart. How we never got a bolt through our heads amazes me today.
