Telstra CDMA to Next G - free phones

I couldn't agree more with you Ray.
I had a analogue bag phone, motorola. Got coverage over most of the farm. I went to CDMA because I was forced to, have about 5% coverage now and you cannot move while talking. Again I am being forced into changing so Telstra can make some more money. I won't be purchasing another phone as they are not as good as CDMA for coverage, and I hardly have any now, so whats the point. Country people have every right to complain we are being ripped off and being forced into buying into a monoploy system like Next G that is worse that what we have now!!!

What about Satelight phones??? Does anyone have one and what do they cost?

As for interferance running two systems on the one tower, that is rubbish. Kondinin group tested a number of different towers one was next G only and the coverage from that tower was EXACTLY the same as the other ones. The LG550 was the best at 35 km the same as the duel system towers and the CDMA Nokia they were testing the Next G phones against have coverage to 49km from memory. The LG with a 6db external aerial only had 49 km coverage. Hardly as good or better coverage that Telstra is sprouting lies about.

If you're upgrading from CDMA to 3.5G on Telstra it would appear that that Harvey Norman are running a deal until Nov 8 where, if you go under contract to purchase a Nokia 6120 over 24 months on a $30 plan, you get a MIO GPS (or similar if they're out of stock) worth $375 (full retail I assume).

As I understand it, this replaces last month's deal where they gave you a $200 cash-back voucher (which you could redeem on your way out of the store).

This could be better than the Telstra deal where they credit $100 to your account but I'm currently unclear as to whether you're contracted for 24 months to purchase the phone or they are in fact giving you the phone with no contract with this deal.

Disclaimer - I don't work for Telstra or Harvey Norman; I'm just a punter, so please do your own research to check out the options for yourselves. I thought this GPS navigation offer might hold some interest for some of you though.

I'm going to stick my neck out here. Don't blame Telstra, blame the GOVT. Their legislation made it a DONKEY. Both sides would have done it though too :o The $$$ were just too big to knock back.

yep, it was a Fed govt faux pas that brought about the initial demise of the analogue network.
Can't remember the ins and outs, but IIRC it had to close or they would have had the pants sued off them by Optus as it was one of the original conditions of Optus' licence to start operating/building a GSM network against Telstra.
Or something like that.

Yes, I got a 6120 for free, plus a digital camera. All worth about $800. For just signing to a $30/month plan. As I was paying more than that, I said yes thankyou.

The deal through the retailers are all driven by Telstra, in order to clear the network so they can switch it off.

They still make heaps by having the monopoly on NextG.

There were a lot of people who went to nextG when it first came out, but they are now swapping to the 6120 as it is a better phone and doesn't have a flip face.

I was told recently by a Telstra engineer, that Telstra will soonish be bringing in a new model for the NextG network, that will blow your socks off.
