When you vote on November 24, you're voting for your local member (and a half senate, those are also vital).
Get to know your local member and ensure that person delivers; few of us can vote for Howard or Rudd, as most of us do not live in the Bennelong or Griffith electorates.

love some of the stuff spouted in this little thread...
wonder when some actual fact makes it into the thread...

Absolutely. We have 150 local members to elect (a fact, Inc.!)- only 2 of these happen to be Messers. Howard and Rudd. Personally, I get to vote for Howard (be it first or last), lest I cast an informal vote by not marking his box (although I am told that the counters attempt to read as much of the vote as they can).
With the current political situation, it is well worth letting your local member know what you want out of them. Failing that, try and put a spine into some of them - so that you elect a representative, rather than a locked-in vote.
Oh well, back to reading "How to be a Megalomaniac"![]()
Facts:-
As far as the House of Representatives goes, it makes little difference who I vote for, seeing that I live in one of the safest seats in the country (although this may be a little bit less safe as a result of the redistribution). I don't see anyone proposing a reform of the electoral system to multi-member electorates, which would largely solve this problem. (Comments from Tasmanians?)
It is worth noting that after most Federal elections, at least in the fifty-odd years I have been taking an interest, the Senate has more closely represented the popular vote than has the House of Representatives, despite being elected by wildly unequal electorates and only half at a time!

I love the references back to the 80's and the "recession" we had to have. One might want to look a little further afield at what happened globally. Then have a look now at what is happening globally, particularly the US stock market and prepare for what is coming in around 12-18months time, it won't be anything like the 80's but where will even a 4% increase in rates leave working Australia. As others have mentioned it is easy to take the credit for the mining boom, worldwide demand is not Howard's doing no matter how much he tries to take the credit. What is his plan beyond that... we is Australia heading?
It is amazing what the Australian people will swallow when dished up by John Howard..... No GST under a Howard Government, why is he standing with no intention of seeing his term through or is this not a core promise, can't imagine Costello actually believes this "PROMISE" again?
Let's not even get started on children overboard etc etc. What would that 32bn do for our health system, education, water facilities, highways or whatever. $20 a week (even if we believe it will happen..... oh hang on the libs, if elected tend to cash back in on this at the next election don't they, after all I'm SURE it wouldn't be raised during the next election campaign!)
And for the record... nothing like a roast with pork crackling and apple sauce hmmmmmmmm..... luch time! (Perhaps a bacon & egg burger!)
There is an old saying "If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything"
What does John Howard stand for, and more to the point who tells him what he can and can't stand for this week?
This is a "leader" who has been dropped by his OWN party 3 times as leader. Leadership by default isn't it? Oh well good enough for him, good enough for the next scavenger waiting in the wings.
